Few bits and pieces needed on new caravan

First off - does anyone have an owners manual for a Swift Silhoutte? Or where to get one?

Secondly, how does a hot water system work? Any links to easy to understand websites would be very helpful. I have the Caravan Manual but it only explains cold water electric pumps. I assume a hot water system will have this but also a heater some where.

I think the brakes may need adjusted on the caravan - the handbrake only holds very high. Would this be the same as on a car? When it holds on a high notch it needs adjusted or a new cable? Also, when use the brakes I could hear a sort of clanging thumping sound, and then I went to pull away again there was a dull metallic thud. Is the brakes engaging and disengaging? Or is there something else needing looked at? It's very hard to describe but it did conincide when slowing down and seemed to improve the longer I drove. The caravan had been sat for a little while so I did wonder if maybe some surface rust had developed in the drums and with use it had worn itself off.

I also need a new jockey wheel - is there anything technical about these I should know? The one on the caravan kept collapsing as we were manouevring it by hand and there are chunks missing out of the "tyre". It's one of those solid ones.

I think that's everything for now, but I will more than likely be back with further questions as I explore my new toy!

Thanks in advance for all your help.

The brakes need adjusting and the thump/thud is probably a faulty overrun damper mechanism - not repairable but can be replaced - then have, or do, a complete brake service and adjustment.

Check carefully whether the chassis is aluminium or steel - Swift used aluminium for a long time before changing back to steel because the aluminium ones can crack, particularly where the A-arms bend to go back to the axle.

That's a very good tip! Will try that tomorrow. Chassis looks in not bad nick. I was at ground level putting the legs down with a torque wrench, haven't got a proper winder yet - will one of those be quicker than a torque wrench?

Have also found the water heater under one of the front seats - its a Carver Cascade. I am hoping I should be able to find an instruction manual for this.

I have also found a sky light is leaking. It seems it is in 2 parts with an outer cover and the outer cover is missing. I have jammed a bin bag under it for now but obviously that will need fixed as a matter of urgency - any tips?

Thanks Kath. Will call tomorrow and see. It is a pretty old one, the bottom half is green, the front doesn't slope very much and it has 13 ins wheels which I think are an old size, but it does have the hot water, auto reverse brakes and plastic windows. It looks fairly modern inside. Would there be any plates or codes any where that would give a clue as to year?

And yes, this weekend is going to be spent working on the caravan as it's only 2 weeks til our first outing! I am hoping that everything still works, and if it doesn't, that it can be fixed cheaply in time to get away. Just got my first confirmation letter of the one of my pitches through the day after we got the caravan home. :)

Need to get some gas and a connector tomorrow. Just about to read my Caravan Manual chapter on using gas.
