Fill Toilet flush from caravan supply

I'd like to investigate if I can fill my Toilet flush tank from a dedicated pipe and inline tap connected to the existing caravan water supply.

I wonder if anyone has done this and could give advice.

At present I fill the flush tank externally (awning side)using old plastic milk bottles filled seperatly from the site tap.

My Washroom sink water supply is next to the toilet. I think I could add a Y splitter to the cold pipe and route this to the Toilet Cassete box or even into the flush Filler opening itself.

If I added a quality in-line tap I could simply open the tap using the pressurised Caravan water supply to fill the flush tank. No Bottles, no spillage. No electrics.

Has anyone done such a thing or have any advice on a small inline tap.

Hi Thorpedo,

Filling the flush tank from the main caravan supply can be done as a previous van I owned had that facility. Bad news is I've no idea about how it actually worked.

My understanding was that the connection of water from the van main supply to toilet was discontinued due to health & safety or hygiene reasons. I can vaguely remember some talk about the possibility albeit unlikely of water from the flush tank seeping back into the water system.

I know Thetford make versions that works in this way, mostly for motorhomes I think. When you press the flush button, it operates a solenoid valve allowing water from the vans system to flush the loo. The valve opening is just the same as you opening a tap, this drops the pressure and switches the water pump on in the normal way. Down side would be you cannot add 'pink' to the flush water...then again!!

Spare parts are available so I suppose it's quite possible to convert but I'm not sure it would be worthwhile?

PS, it does not top up the flush tank, the system is direct and the flush tank remains permanently dry,

My current and previous caravans (both Continental) have had the electric flush (direct fom the on-board water tank), type of Thetford toilets.

We do use "pink", but from a spray bottle.

Thanks for the comments.

Rob-T - Interesting point about hygene. My thinking is that the tap and pipe end would be inside the toilet cassete box and would only ever feed the Toilet flush.

Your comment makes me realise that a non return valve would be essential.

Its funny my 10 year old Baily Ranger has had an electric flush

from day one as standard (using water direct from system) now with the new Pageant I have to consider using the manual pump or

pay for an upgrade - so much for progress.

Steve

I have an electric flush as standard, god forbid that I should have to do anything manual when flushing.

The Flush tank has to be filled from outside the caravan using bottles / watering can or whatever, it is not fed and connot currently be filled from the caravan water supply.

I want to put the pink smelly stuff into the flush tank then open a tap to fill the flush tank from the caravan water supply.

I'm sure I'm not the 1st person to want to that, there must be some other Lazy old Bug__rs out there who have better experience of the rocket science required.

If you convert the flush tank to fill from the van system, how do you know when it's full?? I think I'll stick to using a 5ltr can and fill through the normal filler & put the "pink" in at the same time Christ it doesn't have to be done EVERY day, does it?? One fill usually lasts us about 3 days.

" how do you know when it's full?? "

Same way as you do, I see the water comming to the top, you stop pouring I turn off my tap (or would like to)

"Christ it doesn't have to be done EVERY day, does it??"

Correct, but sods law says I run out as the vistors arrive and I just smeared a large log down the side of the pan, or just as the hot food is ready, or the footy extra time has started, or at 11:30pm ready for bed, too much red wine, Pi..ing down with rain and blowing a gale.

I use a site in the new forest where the water tap is quarter mile away, but the caravan water pipe is 12 inches away so the obvious thing is open a tap, fill the tank and turn off the tap again.

I apologise for my other labour saving devices, sat nav, Microwave, wheels on the water and waste carrier, 4 ring caravan cooker with grill. Fridge and freezer on gas and electric, Sprung mattress, heater, hot water, shower etc etc. Strange but at home my systern fills itself, so why not go part way to that in the caravan.

It would be nice to take along a butler for these mundane tasks, but I suppose that's only for 'Lord B' .

Please pardon my little indulgance; well actually yet another indulgance.

I'm slowly working out what's required and how easy this would be, but it would be good to hear from someone who's done somthing similar, rather than than more people with plastic milk bottles, I've already got a supply of those.

Cheers Tankie - lol

When I have been unable to find a suitable container I have passed the shower head out through the window and refilled the header tank that way.

Not related to GSBs comment but I did like that.

I made a mod like this on our Magenta by teeing into the cold tap feed but I just had an in line tap on the end of the pipe and used it to fill the cassette flush tank via the usual orifice

It was the original bench type of toilet without a seperate fill door though

The latest Thetfords have a drain tube which could be used to fill the tank if modified I would imagine

Yes I stop when its coming to the top, I was assuming that these people who want to convert it to fill from the van supply, want to do it without going outside! And then when you have filled it from the van supply you are 10 ltrs down in the aquaroll!! so you still have to go out to the site tap!!!! As for when you do it "Planning " comes to mind!!!

Going outside is a bind so I still think I need a butler, he could top up the flush while empying toilet cassette, actually maybe a pretty blonde eastern European migrant worker would be cheaper and better looking than 'Gordon the butler' - Lol

My Waterhog is larger capacity than the Aquaroll.

I also have an on board water tank.

When possible I use my Aquasource to hook up to mains water (oops - another little indulgance).

Interesting point, thanks makes me consider an interim solution of a meter of hose pipe with a push on tap adapter.

All of which I alrady have.

I could use the washroom sink tap and put the hose out the window into the Filling orifice.

Nice one, Now you've made me think, I'll have a look to see if I can connect onto the the drain tube and use it in reverse in some way, if so that would make the setup very tidy, Thanks.

No plastic milk bottles suggestions, what a releif!

So not too much of a problem with the occasional loo fill.

I recently logged on to the 3RTR website,I was in B Sqn then Recce tp nicknamed Harold.
Its like pulling toenails!! OK I was B Sqn SQMS 75- the move to Tidworth, left at Easter 77. Which website are you logged on to ? The AArse, The Fearnaught or TCs 3 RTR site, and whats your nickname then. I certainly remember someone called "Harold" but I can't put a face to it!!!!! the old "greymatter" doesn't function too well after 70. Are you also a "caravaner" or just follow this forum?

I've followed the various points made here. But am I missing something.

The flush tank on or van often lasts a week or two. We have an electric point inside the locker to power a pump for filling water tanks. When we get water for aqauroll it just takes a quick splash and dash pit stop with the pump, job done in seconds.

When my aquarol runs out there is always some water left in the bottom which I top up the flush tank with. For initial filling I use a watering can.

Can't say that this problem enough to warrent fitting something more permenant
