My wife & myself have been caravanning for almost 15yrs,& we have'nt really paid too much attention to fire buckets outside units. When on site we have a fire bucket & always have it filled with water outside our unit.

on our last two outings i noted from a site full of caravans, tents etc that we were the only campers with a fire bucket outside our unit, why is this?

Are campers relying on the use of the fire hoses that are arround the site?

Even though it may never be needed, it only takes a few minuets to fill it,& the cost of such bucket arround a fiver.

Whilst a means of tackling a small fire is a good idea I would have thought in these modern days of vans being largely hooked up to mains electric a bucket of water could pose a greater threat than the fire itself.

I have two small extinguishers in the van (One at each end) and always carry a medium size one in the car(Witnessed a car catch fire many years ago and always had one in any car I owned since)

So in answer I would personally deem a bucket of water unsuitable but imagine most van owners have an extinguisher..dont they?

I doubt very much if a bucket of water will stop a caravan fire and if used on a chip pan fire, it would be down right dangerous. We have a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket.

I always have a fire bucket filled and ready to go if needed,it may not do much for a burning van,but an awning or a tent or indeed a person who has caught alight it could be a life saver.

We have always used a fire bucket and am eternally grateful that we do. A couple of years ago we had a fire in our caravan, A chopping board had been put down on top of the hob after the meal had been prepared and, somehow one of the burners had not been turned off properly, while we were sitting outside eating our dinner the smoke alarm went off, we immediatley saw some flames, we grabbed the fire bucket and were able to put out the fire. Thankfully no one was hurt and no lasting damage was done to the caravan, we were VERY lucky.

I have no doubt that the smoke alarm and fire bucket saved our van.

We did also have a fire extinguisher although we didn't need to use it. After this episode I talked with a fire safety officer who told me that the fire extinguishers are often no good as the powder packs down so hard that when you come to use it it doesn't work.

We were advised that a fire bucket and fire blanket are the best things to have.
