Hello there, we've moved from tents to trailer tents and after a year looking, visiting trade shows/dealers and deciding what fits our needs have settled on a new 2015 Sterling Eccles Sport 554 which would be delivered next March. We've been to The Lawns Show today and been offered this caravan at £16300 inc & free delivery from the manufacturer a discount of £1645 off the rrp, total saving of £2190 when delivery is added.

It would be a factory fresh 2015 model and is only a few hundred pounds more than the heavily discounted 2014 vans offered by Stewart Longton Caravans.

Having never bought a caravan before is this a reasonable discount, would we get a better deal at the NEC ?

Thanks in anticipation.

11.8% is a good starting point for discount - but with no p/x you might get more - some dealers will offer the "show discount" even if they didn't attend the show.

Personally, I'd ask for 15% and then stay silent, make them make a better offer.

Many people won't make a low offer because the seller usually tries to make them look silly - let it wash over - you'll never get the best deal unless you do go silly low and then compromise to suit you both.

Good luck in your negotiations.

hi, I agree with Roger start silly and when he stops laughing find out his best deal. then using that figure move on. using it to barter a better deal elsewhere.
I am sure it should be possible to get nearer 20% discount. if you hold your nerve.

If you buy at a show don't forget to consider where the dealer is located, if it's a fair distance from your home and you have to take it back to them for servicing and warranty work the money you save will soon get eaten up.
Pro's and cons each way.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

hi, yes welcome to the forum Saprolith.
I have a simple approach to such things as discounts, make it as big as possible :woohoo: a word for Roger, if that was the best you could get then it was the best deal available,
after all a discount is only a fraction of the dealer profit, how big this is will depend on several circumstances, one of which is overheads the bigger the overheads the smaller the discount a small dealership who owns his own premisses may well give a bigger discount than say a national company. and a sale [any sale] will boost the profit margins by a larger ammount.
another way to look at is this, you buy a brand new van at the list price, you go collect it drive out of the forecourt on to the road. by the time you get to the first roundabout it value has reduced, as it is now second hand or might as well be it could have lost up to 15% of its value. in 10 mins, the nearer you pay to this reduced amount the better.
there is an old saying "if you pay the top list price you have been robbed.

Well I've ordered a new Eccles Sport 554, a phone call and some gentle negotiations got a further £300 off the rrp taking it down to £16000 inc delivery from £18490. We also got a discounted first service and some sort of gas filter thing to stop oil build up ?!? fitted free described as being worth £175.

All things considered we're very happy, we got the modern interior and great spec that fit our needs and should see a lot of use over the next few years as my retirement approaches.

Thanks for the nudge to push for some extra discount, I'll return in full when I have it attached to the car and in the meantime have a good read of all the advice on the forum.
