First Timer to Spain

Hi,

Firstly - i am looking for a campsite in spain (med side) not too busy, but with good facilities. we have three young children.

Also coming from the midlands, i could do with advice on how to break up the journey, stop off recommendations in france? is it best to go to Calais or a western port?

We did south brittany in 2007 and loved it and want to go further next year?

Any help gratefully received.

As you have 3 young children - have you thought about sailing into Spain and then travelling back perhaps up the coast of France & sailing home from Cherbourg / Caen? We did this about 2 years ago and it did not turn out too expensive but cut down a bit on road travelling.

i did think about that, but thought that it would be V expensive taking a caravan on the boat? i was also worried as i have done the portsmouth - bilbao route and was as sick as a dog when i woke up on the first day!

what is the road like accross the top of spain - looking on various sites, it can be as much as 750kms from bilbao to thg med coast?

wherabouts did you stay in spain?
 
We went with Brittany on the Pont Aven, on the Sunday after the top floor of windows were blew out by storms! Not a bad crossing however and only one night on the ferry to Santander. In think we only paid around
 
Depending on where you want to go in Spain, the west coast route down France and then across to Vallencia is very good and avoids potential trouble spots round Barcelona and Madrid.

Briefly - Caen / Cherbourg / St Malo then down to Bordeaux, then St jean de Luz on the border, into Spain and Pamplona, Zaragoza, Teruel and then Valencia. Then north a bit or south to choice. This is mainly 4 lane (some toll) but quite interesting ride and there should be plenty of sites open in season. I've used this route 5 years running but in January when there are not too many sites available.

If you look on www.viamichelin.com or similar you can get distances etc. and also see some shortcuts - typically round Zaragoza to the south - which could save up to 150 miles.

thanks ray - will look - can you give any recommendations for campsites on the med in spain?
