Fitting a radio? help please

I'm hoping somenone can help us. Up to now we've used a portable Radio/CD player in the van but radio reception isn't always brilliant. In fact in Braemar we can only really get NECR with any clarity. It's OK but it can be a bit repetative.

Can we fit a car radio in our new Bailey 460/4? Do we need anything special? I've looked back as far as I can but I can't find much on radios.

Any help would be useful and much appreciated.

Hello Country Lass, If you mean you have a NEW caravan and a radio does not come as a standard fitting I would be very very surprised if there is not a slot to fit a radio which is prewired. There is usually a wired block which connects to the prewired block on the back of the radio, you just slot them together. I bought the cheapest radio/cd player from Argos and have took it out of my last caravan and fitted it in my new one.

Yes Country Lass you can fit a car radio in a caravan.

If there isnt provision for a radio, you / or some one else can make a 5 sided box from ply-wood cut a slot in the front for the radio.

Run a 12volt + & - to the radio.

Fit an ariel.

I possitiond speakers housed in speaker pods on the shelf over the front window.

If you use a Status type TV aerial it will only be Ok for FM reception

If you want to use AM you will need another aerial (car type)

I prefer the non boosted as I have experienced interference via the 12V as well as from the van charger on AM

It is better to run wires from the battery via an inline fuse as using the van 12V sockets or wiring is OK until you connect to the car when the habitation relay will cause the radio to lose its memory

Most new vans seem to fit the unit inside a cupboard these days

Hi Country Lass,

If you are trying to fit a car type radio to improve reception, beware, it might be no better. May I suggest that when you are next on a poor radio reception site, have a quick word with some of your fellow caravaners about their reception. If they have fitted radios and still experience difficulties, then the problem is with the location not the radio, and this might save you some expense.

Apologies Bob, I must have been listening to the wrong people. Seriously though I am looking forward to hearing Radio 4 and Classic FM in the mornings.
