Fitting replacement breakaway cable

o.k. maybe not that technical but I wasn't sure exactly what category this fitted into.
I'm planning on replacing my existing breakaway cable with the one with the carabiner clip for fixing direct to a connection on the towbar rather than looped around the detachable towball. One of these:

Did the same with my last van but had a bit of a problem connecting the new cable to the fitment on the bottom of the brake handle. It seems to be just hooked on, then the eye of the hook is closed over to stop it detaching. Problem is it is very difficult to close this hook without resorting to the use of a hammer. Last time I tried squeezing with large pliers but couldn't get it to budge. Eventually did resort to the hammer but was very conscious of the possibility of doing damage to the actual fitting, not the cable hook. Did think about fitting a large split ring rather than just direct to chassis.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Robert

I found that by using a series of minor adjustments mole grips did the job. A bit time consuming though.
