Hi,intend to fit a Whale inline pressure switch (code no. WU7207)to an onboard water system which operates at the moment just with an inline Whale pump. Purchased new (ebay)with no instructions.(1)pressure switch has two 12v terminals are these interchangeable as the "micro switch spade terminals are the same"(2)can I wire the pressure switch so that when it cuts out (due to low water pressure-tank empty) inline pump will switch off automaticly. Cheers and thanks for your help. brian.

Hello Brian,

As far as I am aware, the contacts in the pressure can be connected either way. Basically they should interrupt the positive supply to the pump.

The pressure switch functions by sensing the pressure generated by the pump, in the pipe work. The pump will be energised if the pressure is too low.

As the pump runs the pressure starts to rise, the switch will cut the power when the preset pressure is reached.

The pressure switch should contain a non-return valve so that the water will not return to the tank when the pump switches off.

If there is no water in the tank the pressure will not rise, so the pump will continue to run. It is important to be aware of this, as the majority of inline pumps rely on the water passing through the pump to cool the motor and to lubricate and preserve the integrity of the internal seals. Without water the pump will overheat and destroy its-self.

It's just a switch so connect either way.

Whale reduced the size of the water connection from 1/2" to 3/8" sometime after 2001 - only the 3/8" is available as replacement so you may need adapters.

Thanks RogerL for your post, the adapters came with the pressure switch and also for informing me that the the 12v terminals are interchangeable. brian.

Find instructions PDF for Whale here http://www.whalepumps.com/caravan_RV/product_list/16/88/
Hi Jason R, had already found the Whale site that you gave, but it did not mention if the terminals were interchangeable, which I now know they are. Thanks for your time, brian.

Hi John L, thanks for your reply which was very detailed, read it again tonight and found it very helpful. Now I know the 12v terminals are interchangeable. Regarding inboard pump I was not aware if it ran dry even for a short period it would over heat and burn out (there must be a way of linking the pressure switch when it cuts out that the inline pump will also stop). brian.

Make sure that you put an accessible switch in line with the pressure switch - as previously stated the pump is not designed to be run dry and will over heat, so if the tank runs out of water the pump will keep running. The pressure switch can only operate when there is water in the system to be pressurised. You will need to be able to shut it off until you refill the tank. A fuse in the circuit is also a good idea
