It must be on everyone's mind, how did a modern ship with no doubt every kind of GPS electronic navigation, radar, depth measuring equipment manage to run aground, they have built in warning devices watertight bulkheads etc etc.
I'm sure many questions are being asked.

It would be OK as long as they did a Risk Assessment ...... It's amazing what you can get away with by doing a RA.
You just conclude there is no other way of doing it and it's as safe as reasonably practicable. No Brainer really.

That picture reminds you of the Herald. (shudder) Fortunately very few fatalities reported so far; however for the families of those who died this is no consolation. We went on a cruise a few years ago and the cruise ships are getting bigger, the docks aren't and the numbers of ships trying to dock in limited space is also increasing massively. Perhaps with these commercial pressures, it was only a matter of time before something terrible happened.
Prayers for those involved.

Those cruise boats always look top heavy so when some water enters the hull, it is over in minutes. Not far from where we lived there was also a similair sinking. The captina and first mate were the first onshore "so they could direct rescuse operations" I kid you not! Afterwards there were that many insurance claims for video cameras that the insurers started refusingt o pay out. In 1991 video cameras were expensive!

Is it me? I wouldn’t have thought that Surfer’s link was the best place to advertise “Greek Island Cruises”

Hmm ! I thought that the captain said he was the last man off ...........
Turns out he was in a life raft for over an hour whilst the ship was rolling over listen to this ..........

Such a magnificent ship lying on it's side is a terrible sight and it looks as though the captain could be responsible for the deaths of several of his passengers.
Apparently his employers have said that the ship was off course and that the captain took an unauthorised route, what's the betting that he tries to blame the sat nav?

Here's a new twist, the captain of the stricken cruise liner Costa Concordia has denied accusations he abandoned ship, saying he tripped during the panic on deck, and fell overboard into a lifeboat that was just going to shore.

The company that owns the ship, Costa Cruises, has suspended Capt Schettino and withdrawn an offer to pay his legal costs, according to reports.
