The existing carpet in my relatively old caravan is somewhat dirty and would benifit replacement.

Due to the intended use the van will be put to, and that I have a habit of getting things dirty, I am not too keen on replacing like for like as knowing me a couple of weeks use would get it looking the same!

The van will mainly be used as accomodation at steam fairs, so there is plenty of potential for treading in mud etc or worse!

My thoughts are along the lines of

a) laminate flooring

b) linoleum

c) Some kind of Flotex type carpet.

As the van is not worth a lot and I am on a budget, cost is probably going to be the main factor, so b) is most likely. However I could be swayed by argument to any of the others or indeed any other alternative if a good case can be put!

Hi C&C

I would go for the lino if I were you. The pattern that looks like laminate is very effective in caravans and if you look in carpet shops, or indeed some market stalls that sell rugs, you can buy long narrow strips of rug that will fit on the floor between the seats that you can place down at night to keep your feet warm. They can be bought for less than

Sorry Simon, I was being a bit too abrupt! I just know that even with rugs on I would still probably manage to get it dirty!

S&C,

I am certainly leaning towards lino and rugs, the rugs can be put down when I want it to be a bit more posh, and with a bit of luck could be cleaned if (or when) I get them dirty, or if not no great loss..

Hi C'n'C

I'd suggest the standard, robust solid vinyl "lino" flooring used in European caravans - and maybe the cushion floor stuff as a second choice, but this won't be as robust.

Many Eriba owners also tow with classic cars and attend "fests" - and it's dead easy to just sweep the vinyl floor when needed - and then mop out at the end of the fest.

In our Eriba we've fitted a rubber backed cotton entrance mat - about 600mm by 450mm - and it's a real dirt-magnet and doesn't move around on the vinyl floor.

We're with Robert - lino for us.

Our Geist was supplied with lino flooring that looks like wooden laminate with loose laid carpets on top. We've removed the carpets as they're a lovely buttermilk colour that's not very practical with 3 kids and we just have a cheapo carpet runner down at night. The rest of the time, it's fine with just the lino which can be swept with a dustpan and brush and cleaned down with soap and water if necessary so no need to carry a vacuum cleaner. Saves a bit of weight too.

Cheers

Claire & Rob

When I bought my elderly caravan the carpets were quite disgusting - I don't think they had had any sort of cleaning in years.

I cut them out - the rubber backing had turned into a grey dust - and repalced with an offcut of cushion back lino which only cost a few quid (

I agree with Oldfogey. Our Royale has lift-out carpet which we took up when we bought the van, leaving the cushion floor underneath. We've never felt the need to put it back, except when we want to show off!!

Why not have a look at the rubber backed bath mats. These can be bought in 2 different sizes: small and large --- the large one(s) fit snugly between the front seats and are about as long. We use them as extra insulation.

They come in various colours and when dirty you can throw them into the washing machine!

Many thanks for your replies! Lino it is then!

I may or may not add rugs to cover it from time to time, I'll see how it goes. Might get one of those dirt magnet type mats for next to the door - I think JML do something?
