Hi Ed My wife and I have Dahon folding bikes and are very pleased with them. They weren't cheap but are all alloys so much lighter and no rust like steel, have 20inch wheels so give a more comfortable ride than smaller wheels and have six gears though I'm sure three would surfice! They also fold very easily. Don't know about Raleigh Swifts.

We bought two about five years ago. Used them for one weekend, sold them on the Monday. Can't remember anything about them, other than that they were very uncomfortable, difficult to ride, and I lost a bucketful of money when I got rid!

Better luck with yours.

We have 2 folding bikes, Raleigh Swifts with 20" wheels, and they suit our purpose admirably. 6 gears, easily folded and for us "ride" in the back of the car (VolvoV70), they are not the lightest folding bike on the block, but you get what you pay for! Ours cost £148 each from Halfords. No freebies tho! They suit our needs and are ideal for pottering around on, on relatively flat terrain - depending on your level of fitness - or popping to the local shop etc. I wouldn't recommend them for any long distance work tho' or very hilly areas.
