foot pump or 12-volt compressor

There not a chance in hell I'll get the van into the local garage to check & top up tyre pressure.

So what would people suggest. A trusty foot pump, easy to use with little to go wrong, or a fancy 12-volt compressor.

Would anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

Gavin

Whatever you prefer.

Depending on what pressures your tyres are needing, some electric pumps will not go high enough.

A good pressure gauge is the most essential bit , lots of on board gauges on electric and foot pumps are not very accurate.

Hi Gavin,

I find the most reliable thing to do is remove the wheels and take them to a garage to use a gauge. Normally I do the tow vehicle wheels at the same time, knowing then that I have the correct pressures on the van and the car.

Not the easiest way to do it but worth it. What price on safety?

P.S. Use a gauge that you have to pay for, these are calibrated and checked by the Trading Standards and are more likely to give an accurate reading.

Hi Gavin

My single axle caravan tyre pressures are 65psi !!!!!!!!!!

I cannot even depress my footpump to inflate - it's just solid.

I have tried a couple of cig. lighter 12v pumps but even on the car [29psi] it takes 5+ mins to inflate 1psi. I usually have to hunt for a commercial vehicle Air pump at filling stations - many pumps inflate up to 50psi. The problem is that by the time I arrive at an air pump I have travelled some distance and the tyres are heated and my pressure reading will not be accurate. Ideally inflation needs to be done with cold tyres. I am now considering - Halfords Rapid Digital Tyre Inflator

I've just joined the caravan club so I missed the review in the clube magazine. What did they recommend?

Simon - thanks for the reply, taking the wheels off sounds a bit to much like hard work to me.

Would anyone recomend any particular products? What about the Halford products mentioned by Mike?

Thanks

I got an RAC double foot pump from Argos mainly because it was the only one I could find that said the gague was acurate to 1PSI and could handle up to 100PSI. I have just checked and they no longer sell them but there are some on ebay (
