I remember the pads being a bit fiddly. I think I was trying to keep everything too tight which resulted in the poles not reaching the caravan and the base of the awning not reaching the ground!
I think I managed, in the end, by keeping everything a bit loose and ensuring that the awning followed the line of the poles, ie - the corners fitted and the poles lined up with the seams and, in particular, the base (top of the mudwall) was a comfortable distance from the ground. I think that's what worked in the end - keeping the awning close to the ground kept the poles closer to the caravan. We then tensioned the poles at the very end.
The curtains, I think, just slide onto a bit of plastic beading at the top of the window.
I hope this helps, but your awning may be totally different to ours!
