Ford Mondeo

We own a Ford Mondeo 2.0 Ghia petrol registered in July 2001. Does anyone know what our maximum tow weight is and the maximum weight a towbar will support?

We have had various answers from caravan outlets, caravan manufacturers and ford dealerships ranging from 1,300kg to 1,800kg!

The whattowcar site is not that helpful as the weights given for cars are for EU spec. My car for instance is shown as weighing 200kg less on the whattowcar site, so the 85% bit is way off. It does however give an idea about perfomance on the straight and uphills in various gears.

DEBORAH, I have had a look and can not find any definate information on your car, i would play it safe and visit a ford dealer with the car and ask for confirmation as to its kerbweight and max tow limit along woth max hitch head load. better safe than sorry. the whattowcar site is very good as a guide but like the captain it also gave me incorrect figures for a uk sourced car, it was out by only 45 kgs on the kerbweight but that could be the difference between safety and a fine.

The weights given by whattowcar are for the minimum weight of the basic bamodel without any optional equipment etc.

I make the weight of your car 1405kgs, which sounds about right considering the weight of my 2003 Mondeo Diesel TDCI is 1500kgs. This means that the towing capacity at 85% is only 1195kgs. 90% is 1265kgs. Your towbar will have an aproval plate on it with the maximum towball weight stamped on it as recommended by Ford. Mine is 75kgs if this helps.

Thanks Sonic but I think you have already helped me in a different message (Ford Mondeo) where you said that you made the weight of our car 1405kgs and the towing capacity at 85% is only 1195kgs. I think this will limit us quite a lot as there do not seem to be many caravans that are that light. We like the layout of the Bailey Pageant Provence which is the same as the Swift Challenger 490 but cheaper but both are heavier than 1195kgs.

Hi deberah i can see why you are confused with kerb weight , i own a ford Mondeo 5 door estate 6 speed manual transmission TDCI and the kerb weight in my owners manual is 1590,what car has it at 1547,practical caravan has 1486 .so who's right ,so debs get yourself a ford manual ,that way its straight from the horses mouth
