I am considering changing from a Mk1 to a Mk2. Has anyone had problems with Mk2? I have heard they are poor on fuel (Diesel)!

Hi Richard

you will notice a mpg reduction as the Freelander 2 is a bigger car and a bigger engine (2.2lt).

I've driven both (in diesl , auto form) and got about 28-30 solo round town from the Freelander 1 (never towed with it so cant comment on that)

From the FL2 I used to get about 24-26 town driving and towing this dropped to 20-22 towing a 1500kg van.

Good tow car very strong , never missed a beat and on the hilly A30 into Cornwall I could maintain 60 up hill on the steepest inclines if I needed to.

Reason I changed was the drivers seat leg room was too short for me and I couldn't get comfortable which aggrevated my back injury too much.

Other than that a good car - just make sure you find a good dealer , they can be the most obnoxious gits around....personal view only of the 2 local dealers in my area!!!.

I've had a GS Auto for nearly 2 months now and towed 4 times and it is a superb towcar and we are really pleased with it.

Can't find any faults but I assume petrol consumption is a little high. I did a few hundred miles before I towed at lower revs and got up to 38 mpg which has now normalised to about 32-34. Towing I get 24 - 26 mpg but for performance and stability can't fault it.

Hi Richard

I have a 57 plate Freelander 2 SE Auto diesel, which I have covered 45,000 miles in without a single problem. I get 32-34mpg solo but only 17-20 towing a Bailey Senator Wyoming. The Freelander 2 is a fantastic towcar apart from fuel consumption, but that could just be my heavy right foot! This is in stark contrast to my previous Freelander a 2003 TD4 manual this had no end of problems and in 120,000 miles had a replacement engine at 69,000 miles also had replacement turbo, driveshaft and 4 new injectors (thankfully all under warranty). Despite all this did like the car.

Would not hesitate to recommend the Freelander 2.

I have a LR fitted towbar on my Freelander 2 with 13 pin socket.

I was told that when the car detects a trailer via the 13 pin plug certain of the car's characteristics change i.e. the lower gears 'hang' on to the revs longer before changing up, a bit like 'sport' mode.

If you can be bothered using the manual selector can improve mpg.

Hi,

If you go to the What Car web site you will see some 13 pages of owner reviews on the FL2. The vast majority saying that it's very good car and has overcome the reliabilty issue that plagued FL1. Although there are some with problems but that is not any diffrent to the other car reviews of other makes.

Cheers

I did some research before buying an FL2 but could find no negative comments about the safety, the drive and towing capabilities.

The only negative comments were :-

A bit pricey. The GS still appears to be the best value to me.

A bit thirsty. Certainly worse than my X Trail but not too bad.

Small boot area. About par for this type of vehicle.

Richard,

Am in my 3rd towing season with my FL 2 SE TD4 manual with which I replaced my Mondeo 2ltr tdi when we got our Bailey Senator Indiana 1500kg.

Wonderful tow car with this match, Just got back from overland trip at 24mpg. Solo I get about 35mpg. But I do find best towing economy is driving at non motorway speeds of 40/50 mph.

Very comfortable very stable towing motorway 60mph+ no noticable truck side wind disturbance can carry two mountain bikes on towbar as well as accomodating 90kgs noseweight. As expected great traction when towing in deep mud.

Debit side is lack of luggage space with rear seats in place, fortunatly with only two of us we can lay these down which improves things but its still a jolt after the Mondeo.

Service costs are high, local dealer wanted
