Freelander Kerbweight

we love the look of the Freelander TD4 but thr early one only have kerbweight of 1555kw bit worried about towing the van weight 1300kw, but the TD4 kerbweight is 2080kw just what we are looking for but what year did they come out, hope you can help us out, many Thanks Trevor

TREVOR ive got one of the first td4 registered october 2000 also you will find the kerbweight is 1619 85% is 1376 but it will tow between 1800-2000 hope this is some help

your freelander will only legaly tow up to 100% of its kerbweight which as you state is 1619 kgs. don't get confused with manufacturers max tow weights, these are a guide as to what the maker says is safe for the car with regards to engine power gearbox and brakes. in this country and indeed most other countrys you can only tow up to 100% of your kerbweight ideally stick to the 85% rule although i must admit i tow at around 90%. my galaxy has a max tow weight of 2000 kgs but i can only tow up to its 1710 kg kerbweight.

IN SOME WAYS YOUR RIGHT JOHN I WOULD'NT WANT TO TOW MORE THAN THE WEIGHT OF MY CAR BUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 4X4 AND PEOPLE CARRIERS IS THEY HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO,IVE SEEN MANY A 4X4 WITH KERBWEIGHTS OF 2000kgs TOWING A HORSE BOX WITH 2 HORSES INSIDE THATS GOT TO BE MORE THAN THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR

John. Even though I agree that it is unsafe to tow more than a vehicles kerbweight it is not illegal to do so if the vehicle max tow exceeds its kerbweight. Richard S

John it is not illegal to tow a trailer that exceeds the unladen weight of the towing Vehicle it depends on your driving license if you passed your driving test before 1997 you can tow a trailer that is heavier that the towing Vehicle. If you passed your test after this date it is illegal unless you sit a further towing test. If you visit the DVLA web site all will be explained.
