Coming home from a weekend away today pulling the van, the engine management light came on, looked at the temp. and that was fine.

I happened to look at my wing mirrors only to see black smoke coming out of the back of the car.

Looked quite alot against the cream caravan background.

We got off the motorway and took our time to the caravan compound.

Light had gone off, almost as quick as it had come on.

Continued our journey to the house, when the light came on again, so we pulled over and called the AA. They took us the rest of the way home.

We need to call the AA out tomorrow to see what the problem is, if they cannot solve the problem they will tow it to a garage.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance, Allyson

Allyson,

Last year towing on the motorway our 2003 TD4 had the same problem but with no warning lights. It turned out to be the turbo hose into the intercooler had split.

This was only the start of the problems with the car, in the end the main dealer replaced most of the engine along with the turbo, injectors, wiring looms etc. After several months of trying they could not get the car to run properly and in the end they re-purchased the car off us and we bought a Kia Sorento, havent look back since.

Hi Allyson, assuming air filter is clean and fuel and fuel filter are not contaminated,it could be your exhaust gas recirculation valve (egr)needs cleaning as they often choke up.You can do away with this valve and fit a blanking plate, although this invalidates any warranty, but cleaning the valve is app.30 mins job.If you don't know your way around an engine, you'll need a manual. It could be electrical/sensorproblem ,a LRdealer will plug your LR in and tell you straight away, but I'dgo for egr valve.Agarage should only charge app.50 pounds, hope this helps, good luck,stuart1

Hi Both

I posted the same message on the Landrover forum page, and a member replied today and said that his pipe had split on the intake pipe which feeds air into the turbo.

Went out to see the AA man and hubby to tell them what the guy had said, and they had already found the split pipe, apparently the AA man had come across it before.

The diagnosis test showed nothing wrong.

Thank you all for your help, and well done AA.

Hi all

We have a 55 plate Freelander and it has just come back from the garage the turbo hose on that had split and was leaking oil. Also excessive fuel being used as well all connected to this problem. Hope we aren't going to have more problems with this car as we choose it because it was quite new and suitable for towing our caravan.
