We purchased an admittedly cheap Freeview box from Tesco so I would have a greater choice of channels to watch in the winter months when the other half is off sticking a length of string in a piece of water

Cant seem to get it to work on the caravan TV,a 12v but has the scart sockets and all Thought it may have been the area but have now tried on 3 different sites, the last including a TV hookup in case it was our aerial at fault and yes did check the area was covered first

Any ideas as to where we are going wrong

Thanks in advance

Hi Gill I too bought a cheap Freeview box from Tesco, it worked perfectly in Lincolnshire, but since we moved the van to Cheadle, it does not get a signal at all, even though it said on the internet that it should do. I think the problem is the van is in an old quarry with rock faces around so I am scuppered whilst on this site. I also bought a booster, but that doesn't work with Freeview because the signal is not weak - it is non-existent. I think that may be your problem. When you try to tune your Freeview in, if the message "check attenna connection" comes up and you don't get any channels when you press "search" you won't get a picture at all. Anne

We do not get any message at all, absolutely nothing The instructions say there should be a message saying that this is a new set up and from there giving us the menu to start tuning in

I cant set the Freeview to a channel without some message or picture but cant get a picture until tuned in

Is there a particular band I should be trying to tune into to,cant find that info in the instructions

Gill, just a thought, have you selected the right AV channel on the TV?

On most sets there are 2 AV channels, and it seems that the freeview boxes go to AV2 for some strange reason.

Gill,

A few questions/comments.

99% of all freeview boxes sold will not output the signal on the RF cable but ONLY on the SCART connection on the back of the box. You will have to use this connection to view the freeview pictures.

Assuming you are using SCART connections rather than converting the leads to RCA connections, turn on the TV first and then turn on the Freeview box. This should automatically switch the TV to the correct channel for viewing (the AV channel - AV1 or AV2 etc depending on your connection).

For a first time installation you should now get instructions on the screen, if the box has been tuned or used before you will have to press the MENU button and then choose INSTALLATION then FIRST TIME INSTALLATION.

I always check I can get an analogue picture first then if I can I have a very good chance of getting a digital one. One word of warning though, some sites that pipe the TV signal to your pitch don't carry the digital TV signal as well as the analogue one.

Hope this helps a little.

Giles

Gill, I was told our van would need a wide band aerial which we already had. As I said, ours worked perfectly elsewhere, so I know Freeview works. Even though the internet will tell you whether Freeview works in certain places it doesn't always. If all else fails, you could return the Freeview box to Tesco and get your money back. I am just as frustrated by it as you are. Thankfully, we get decent terrestrial channels on site, but not as much choice. Good luck.
