leona, possibly a number of reasons but the obvious one is that the thermo couple is not functioning correctly. It should be positioned in the pilot flame and should operate the gas valve. When you press the knob in you are overiding it to allow it to get up to temperature.

I can only suggest that a service is required.

Hello Leona,

I fully concur with RayC, it probably needs a service. It may not be apparent why regular services are important on caravan gas appliances: basically most caravans spend more time in storage than being used, and whilst it is unlikely that things wear out, the problem comes with standing unused.

Gas appliances have little tubes called venturies. These make wonderful homes for some insects. When the insect or its nest partially blocks the tube the tube cannot do its job properly which is to mix the gas and air before it is burnt.

Rust and other corrosion can also play its part. When appliances are not used corrosion can really take hold on some parts.

Gas Service work must be carried out by a competent person.
