We have a 2001 Charisma 220 with an Electrolux three way fridge. The two metal wire shelves in the fridge have oxodised and part rusted.

Can anyone please suggest a remedy; or where I might be able to purchase new ones.

Thank you.

Many thanks Rupert - that is a brilliant link. I've sent them an e-mail and await their response.

Will let you know how I get on.

Kind regards

Linda

Thanks for this link - we found the same problem, which appeared to have started when we put the shelves into the dishwasher to give them a good clean. I'm getting in touch with Dometic to see how much a new set will cost, after trying to 'wire-wool' the current shelves back to some sort of shine. The super shine I managed to obtain on one shelf after rubbing it for ages lasted all of a day - and then went back to the original corroded appearance!

Without knowing the details of every caravan fridge - then I'm guessing your fridge was like ours - around 5 years old, and the plating / coating had started to show it's age.

Removing and storing the wire shelves outside of the caravan will prolong the life of the coating.

But if your coating has started to form dull grey patches - then you can try what we did - buy a large bottle of cheap supermarket Diet Cola, a large flat tray, and an old toothbrush. Submerge the fridge grids in the Cola (overnight) and use the toothbrush to work over the areas of corrosion.

The refreshing sharp tang of Cola is there because it uses Phosphoric Acid to make the drink mildly "acidic" - and Phosphoric Acid in combination with metal forms an insoluble layer of Metal Phosphate. It's an old tip used on bike wire wheels and car chrome bumpers - you could either buy the expensive stuff from Halfords or buy the same acid in a bottle of Cola for 19p...

And why Diet Cola - simply becuase it's not stuffed full of sugar and you can paint it straight away once dry.

Because if the fridge grids still look "snotty", then a can of Hammerite or Plasticote spray paint (silver colour) will provide a good, hard-wearing and clean surface.

And that's what we did to our wire shelves - and a few years on - they still look like new (or just painted).

Robert

P.S. Wire wool will strip the metal coating from the wire shelves - you've been a bit too enthusiastic - and there's no way back...
