Without knowing the details of every caravan fridge - then I'm guessing your fridge was like ours - around 5 years old, and the plating / coating had started to show it's age.
Removing and storing the wire shelves outside of the caravan will prolong the life of the coating.
But if your coating has started to form dull grey patches - then you can try what we did - buy a large bottle of cheap supermarket Diet Cola, a large flat tray, and an old toothbrush. Submerge the fridge grids in the Cola (overnight) and use the toothbrush to work over the areas of corrosion.
The refreshing sharp tang of Cola is there because it uses Phosphoric Acid to make the drink mildly "acidic" - and Phosphoric Acid in combination with metal forms an insoluble layer of Metal Phosphate. It's an old tip used on bike wire wheels and car chrome bumpers - you could either buy the expensive stuff from Halfords or buy the same acid in a bottle of Cola for 19p...
And why Diet Cola - simply becuase it's not stuffed full of sugar and you can paint it straight away once dry.
Because if the fridge grids still look "snotty", then a can of Hammerite or Plasticote spray paint (silver colour) will provide a good, hard-wearing and clean surface.
And that's what we did to our wire shelves - and a few years on - they still look like new (or just painted).

P.S. Wire wool will strip the metal coating from the wire shelves - you've been a bit too enthusiastic - and there's no way back...
