Fridge vent Fans

I installed my own cooling fans using a couple of 12v computer fans bought from Maplin for £5 each. OK, they're controlled manually by a switch, not automatically but they were very effective in Italian heat a few months ago.

They don't need to be thermostatically controlled - you know when you're in a climate hot enough to need them.

Do the computer fans that people use go behind the top or bottom fridge vent and are they supposed to suck or blow? I've thought about fitting these to our van

The most effective place to put them is at an angle at the bottom of the cooling matrix, blowing upwards across the cooling fins.
Keep them away from the burner area.

I always put mine at the top sucking the hot air out

I always felt that blowing in at the bottom could increase draughts inside the van whereas sucking out at the top would reduce them
But maybe increased draught would be an advantage in the temps that would need fridge fans to be used

I understand it is safer to blow out rather than blow in / up, as there is less likeyhood of blowing gases into the van. We have a Thretford fridge for our sins, and the exhaust gas, exhausts into the area above the back of the fridge. Seems to be a stupid idea as it relys on a gas tight fit of the fridge to the van body.

Our fan was fitted to blow out by our dealer. Having said this it still does not cool very well when the sun is on that side especially when the van door is open which then covers the fridge vent!

The two computer fans I used I mounted (using Araldite) to the back/inside of the top vent so that they were "sucking" warm air from above the fridge cooling fins and "blowing" it out through the ventilator.
The fans I used are from Maplins code RG03D (80 x 80 x 25mm). After an initial experiment I re-wired the fans in series which made them much quieter and still very effective.
