Hi, can anyone please tell me if you should use the fridge winter vents all year round when the van is not used or, are they only needed during long periods of storage? thanks, Craig.

Craig, I use mine any time the van is in storage, its one less place for insects to gain entry, and if , as it is now, it rains heavily, with gale force winds, they stop any wind blown water getting in

We do the same Craig, we don't have the fridge on when travelling so we just leave the covers on until we arrive at a site, and then put them back when leaving.

They are needed in winter to prevent over cooling and keep snow etc from blowing in through the vents.

Bailey provide them as standard and many Bailey owners seem unaware that they should be taken off in summer.

I've met several people on continental rallies who have read the handbook with surprise when asked why they had the vent covers on in a heat wave.

Our friends who have caravanned for years still had their vent covers on their Pageant when we were with them recently with temperatures of 35C.

They couldn't understand why the fridge wasn't getting cold !!

No problem John, as a general rule put the vents on when the temperature drops below 8.0 centigrade and remove them again next year when it gets higher than 8.0 centigrade, all should then be well.

At the risk of sounding daft, could someone please explain to me what the fridge winter vents are used for. I thought they where to be used in the winter for storage, are they safe to use when the fridge is run off gas? And do I need one one for each fridge vent?

Steve, its not a stupid question at all as the manufacturers dont explain that these vents should be used.

What they are needed for is if you use the van in cold climates below 8.0 degrees is the recomended as far as i can remember, then you should restrict the amount of cold air that can get to the back of the fridge and as a result over cool the fridge condensing coil, if this happens then the fridge will malfunction and at best overcool or at worst not work as the thermostat will not make contact. they also stop a lot of the cold air blowing in to your van, of course you should remove the vents as soon as the temperature rises above 8.0d again.
