Front Locker Light?

Do any vans have a light in the front locker?
Is it safe to fit an LED in there?
Can I assume it would be safe to fit LED in locker and switch somewhere inside the van?
Am assuming a switch in the locker could potentially arc/spark? (thinking possible gas leak!)
Or should I stick to the trusted torch?

Yes you could fit a LED light in the front locker with a remote switch.
What you cannot have is any switch or "hot", ie incandescent, light and any cable which enters the van from the locker directly MUST be through a gas tight gland.

I once had an Abbey which had a light fitted into the A frame as standard . This shone into the front locker and gave just enough light to see.. The switch was part of the light fitting.
I haven't seen an A frame light on a new caravan for years but i suppose you could always use a head torch to keep both hands free to delve into the locker

My S5 senator has a light in the front locker. The switch for it is on the master control panel in the van. This is standard fit by the factory.

I once fitted a 12v. light in there, (In the days before forums and all this knowledge!) But now my solution is a hanging battery led lamp. Which illuminates the locker superbly. I also use a head lamp when out and around the van in the dark, it's always with you then, (Ps I know your mate Sproket uses one, even for dog walking! Bet he'll be on shortly to tell you)

Now look here SirRogerFFS or whatever you call yourself, I have been GIVEN two LED lights so why would one want to buy a torch and a constant supply of batteries if there is an alternative. ;)

I know you retired folk have an endless supply of cash but us poor woking class folk have to watch all our pennies for when we retire :p
Have a nice day

Hello Craig,

The reason there is a debate about what you can put inside the gas bottle locker, is all to do with the potential for a leak of gas to be ignited. There is always a potential for an electric switch to create a spark, equally a conventional bulb if its base is slightly corroded could cause a spark, and if that spark happens to be in a gas locker where there is a leak of gas, then there can be an explosion and fire.

So sadly even you battery operated LED lights if they have an integral switch they have the potential to create a spark and should not be fitted inside the gas bottle locker.

You can get water proof LED strips, which provided the power wires are soldered and taken to a switch not inside the gas locker box would be a relatively safe light to use.

Your right ... you can't beat a headlamp much easier to use that a torch when dog walking and you need three hands  ( have got quite a few knocking about )
Aldi will have them in stock again soon....
