dear tech advice team pc.

your advice on fuel consumption calculation is incorrect. using your method gives us gallons per mile/

to get mpg you must divide miles by gallons.

another way is to divide litres by 4.54 which gives your total gallons, then divide miles by the no of gallons.

I use miles/litres x 9/2 and then add 1% by rounding the figure and repeating after the decimal point - it is easier and more accurate than 4.54 and can be done in your head if you are fairly good with figures.

i.e.

100 miles divide by 10 litres = 10 miles per litre

10 X 9/2 = 45

repeat figure after decimal point = 45.45 mpg

You can forget the 1% if you are not that worried by accuracy.
