Fuel Costs Consider LPG ??

With all the talk of 'Rising costs' and 'Getting out' why not consider LPG?

I run a Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.3 V6 on LPG but we are 'lucky' in that at 20,000 miles a year we got the conversion [£2k] 'paid for' in 12 months.

We get 20 MPG solo and 15 towing, but at half price fuel thats like doing 40MPG Solo, not bad for 2 ton of seven seater that'll pull 1600Kgs and / or out-drag the boy racers when needs 'must'!

If one were to convert a car that did 40MPG [Eg a Vectra] you end up with a 75MPG motor thats a useful tow car.

Buying converted cars is normally no-where near as dear as having the conversion done, you'll simply pay closer to 'top-book' and have to be quick off the mark!

filling up isn't too difficult once you find your local stations and you can still use petrol if you get stuck.

OH YES AND ITS CLEANER & GREENER TOO!!

Yes apparently it's cleaner and greener at the moment, but as soon as it becomes more popular and common do you think the chancellor (of whatever party) will pat him/herself on the back for a job well done ? Or will some scientific report come out declaring we were wrong all the time and that the emissions from LPG are every bit as bad as all other fuels? Then the government will be "forced" to increase the duty on it for the good of the environment.

Enjoy your riches but don't gloat 'cos they will come for you too eventually.

No Gloating at all , there are down sides & i know that one cleaner things like Hydrogen fuel cell take off i'll get clobered for tax,

BUT. Now, with my conversion paid for i'm happy with the motor i've got for what it is and fills my needs.

I was trying to point out that we can all save money if , for each of us, the pros out-weigh the cons. This is mostly high milage drivers but caravanners with there extra fuel use towing would see benifits quicker.

Sorry if i came across as gloating, not my intention.

Millie's dad, I've been running LPG'd Range rovers for over twelve years now, and the sceptics were saying exactly that twelve years ago. I'm still waiting. Even if "they" double the price of gas, I will have saved over

Hi emmerson,

My dad was running a Landrover SII with a SD1 V8 in it back in the late '80's. On LPG, We did miles in the thing, I though i was SO cool as a kid, my dad would burn off the boy racers in thier 1.6 cortinas!

Happy days eh?

Range Rovers are great aren't they, my mate has a new shape one with the 4.6 BMW V8 on LPG. whats yours?

Gareth
I've currently run a rather special 1994 4.2 litre LSE. This is a sgood as it got for the classic, as this model was a test-bed for the then soon to be announced P38. It's got most of the P38's toys, which unfortunately means its also got some of the electronics problems too! I agree though, they are fantastic cars.

HOLD ON!!

Did you say 2.9d as in Deisel??

I know its possible to convert deisels but thats all i know, sorry.

Diesels do not run solely on LPG as petrols do. The gas is used to enhance fuel-burnig, therefore increasing the efficency of the engine.

Hi people

I too run an lpg motor,a 4litre grand cherokee and am amazed at the savings.the sceptics always say about how long it takes to recoup the layout for the conversion but i found that if you are buying second hand the petrol model is far cheaper to buy than the equivalent diesel,in my case about 2 grand cheaper so the cost of the conversion is irrelevant

While LPG is cleaner, it doesn't save energy resources. In fact, it is more costly to produce and distribute than petrol or diesel. Because of lower tax currently imposed, the price does not reflect its true cost so it is only going to be a matter of time before it catches up with the other fuels. Chances are that CNG has a better chance of surviving on a long-term basis than LPG.

Hi Lutz. The "green" thing doesn't bother me, but as I said, if they double the duty ,tomorrow, I've still had a bl**dy good run, and saved

Right......

I have No idea as i said. Is it cheeper to run then , if its burning two fuels at once?

Will extra power shorten engine life?
