We are off to Marbella in early 2008. Ferry, caravan sites all booked but like to plan to the last detail. We will be travelling down the west coast of France to the border crossing around San Sebastion. I know this route quite well. We will then be travelling via Burgos, Madrid and Granada to the Med caost and then down to our destination, a route I have never travelled before. I can find no information of the frequency of service stations or petrol stations on this route (A1/N1V). Can anyone put my mind at rest that they do exist and at what frequency?

I can confirm your run through Spain will be fine for fuel stops. We have done the route to Burgos, on to Madrid and down to South of Alicanti (from the Bilbao ferry) for the last 3 years and there are plenty of places to refuel.

If you are looking for an overnight stop north of Madrid we have used Camping Pico de la Miel at La Cabrera which is 1 minute from the motorway (A1) It is about 20 miles north of Madrid. Coming from Burgos exit 60 or from Madrid exit 57. Enter Cabrera village and follow camp site signs.

Cut and paste the following into your browser for more info;

Its uncanny how this post fits with our situation. We will be crossing Spain via Madrid en-route for the Malaga area at the beginning of January. We also know the route through France down the west coast very well, but have never eeen further into Spain than Santander.

My worry is not about fuel, but more about snow and mountains(being a midlander I don't get much practice driving in mountainous areas!!)My navigator has acertained that it is motorway all the way, but can anyone tell me what the gradients are like and also if they have ever run into snow at that time of year, and if so what were the problems?

If you are going south to Madrid, there is a high pass south of Aranda which can get very snowy in January. Being on the main north south road it is likely to be kept clear, but may increase your journey times considerably due to single lane working. I would plan not to go long distances in a single day, as the number of open all year sites is limited.
