gas bottle fitting

we ran out of gas this weekend and had to get a change.

the one thing i noticed was the hose that attached to the bottle didnt have a seal or o ring,it is for the red gas.

should it have one or not,i leak sprayed the fitting and all was good,no leak.

the van is only a month old so wasnt sure if it was left off

Hi,

When you say red gas, I assume you mean Propane supplied by Calor Gas - different companies use different bottle colours for the different gases.

Propane pig tail hoses normally have a hemi-spherical bull-hose end that butts into a matching socket on the bottle head, and these are gas tight at the medium gas pressure found in a Propane bottle.

The disadvantage is that you need a spanner to apply sufficient force to make the seal, if this is an issue - you can change the pigtail for one with a rubber bull-nose - and this will seal with a simple hand-twist.

Butane gas (lower bottle pressure) usually employs a flat-to-flat butt joint and this uses a flat rubber washer.

The leak check was a good idea - always do this when changing

bottles - a drop of liquid detergent in water works very well.

And the above ignores the "snap-on" type bottle connectors - best not to go there.
