Hi Dazicki,

It depends on which supplier you use - if you bought a Calor Gas bottle in the North - then you can exchange that for a Calor gas bottle anywhere in the UK (from a Calor Gas dealer)

If you bought a Flo-Gas bottle in the North, and then find that Flo-Gas don't have a distributor where you happen to be staying - then you can't perform the exchange - and could be required to buy a new bottle. But in that case don't surrender the empty bottle, that can be exchanged when you return home.

Thanks John L and rob_jax, very useful info, your explanation was both informative and understandable. I honestly didn't know about the differences.

Ah well, the bathroom scales you can use for noseweight can now be used to weigh your gas bottles too :)

Thanks again.

Well sad person that I am I've just tried the boiling water test and yes it works. The water evaporates quickly but at the gas level the bottle stays wet, maybe on a cold day it would frost?. Also you can feel the difference in temperature ,warm at the top and cold at the bottom. Although not that accurate it could help as a quick check. One thing it did show is that I need to go buy some gas ;o(

Brian stop! Don't light a fire under the gas bottle. That's way too dangerous.

You can light one under the toilet though. It won't do you any good, but it will put smile on my face...

Hello Brian,

Never one to avoid a technical challenge, yes the size of the hole under the A frame will tell you if there was any gas left In the bottle- the answer is none, but there is usually a big problem in having to hire a crane to lift the remains of the caravan out of the crater.

But is worth it? Because you usually have to buy a new caravan every time you try this test method. But I do understand that this is the preferred method used by Jeremy Clarkson

Don't bother about running out of gas - invest in a Gaslow auto change over, and that will switch to a spare bottle as soon as one runs out. I've used one for years and it has always used up all of the gas before switch over, and never failed me.

If you have 2 bottles in your front locker use a changeover valve, will empty your bottle completely then change over a brilliant piece of kit

one should never run out of gas,

Hello Klarky,

I suggest you turn the bottle on the top of teh car around, then you can open teh valve and ignite the fow and have jet propulsion assistance.

On a serious note of course bottle must for safety reasons be stored transported and used in the upright position.
