Gas Cylinders

Is there a new rule relating to the siting of gas cylinders on site. We were recently amazed to see a unit roll up oposite and, after setting up, a huge propane gas cylinder was placed on the grass outside his front locker. Not only was it unsightly, it was in full view of everyone around (indeed his neighbour was looking straight at it!). During our stay we saw him open his gas locker box at the front and could clearly see another bottle being housed inside.

Last year we experienced a similar set-up. A van turned up with a gas bottle retrieved from a hot air balloon! He said that he just kept refilling it and it was just fine!!! It was even uglier than the calor container.

Both these experiences were on Caravan Club sites. Am I missing something here? Is it legal?

Hello Ann.

There are legal regulations relating to the storage, transport and use of gas cylinders.

Vapour phase (The tye used for caravans) LPG bottles must be stored, transported and used in the upright position. If they are on thier side, the liqufied gas will engulf the valve gear, and that makes the bottle potentially very dangerous. In the event of damge to the valve, the bottle would eject liquid phase gas, and present a projectile hazard.

Bottles should be secured to prevent them from falling or being knocked over. For dealers that means a ventilated steel cage, for end users that means the gas bottle locker and thier restraints.

I did not see the vanner you refer to, but I would not be surprised if the bottle was transported on its side, and it probabaly was not secured to prevent it falling over at the site. The tall bottles are usually propane, and can hold 47Kg of LPG. The total weight of the full bottles is close to 100Kg. That would swallow up a lot of paylaod in most domestic vehicles yet alone a caravan.

Even though the the bottle is very heavy its height makes it inherently less stable than the dumpy bottles usually used by vanners.I t would produce serious injury to any one that was unlucky enough to be under one if it fell over.

I suggest that if you see another example of such usage that you bring it to the attention of the site owner or operator who has a duty under the Health and safety regulations to prevent unsafe practices on thier property.

Ugly people do not have to have physical imperfections. They may be mean spirited, miserable, aloof, you name it hence my preference for gas cylinders.

When I first started my van did not have a gas locker. Someone gave me a 15 kg bottle. This obviously just sat on the grass at the front of the van.

What do you lot do when you go away? I have a lot better things to do with my time than worry about gas bottles.

you lot are the type that sit in your van sniggering at people trying to put awnings up.

Get a life!
