Martin, The short answer is that Calor produce Butane in blue bottles and Propane in red ones. The equipment in the van will work with either but you need the correct regulator - There is hardly any difference in cost / power output but Butane will not gas below approx 4 degrees centigrade so if you wish to varavan in the winter you need propane.

I`m not sure about the names of the gases but the blue bottle doesn`t like frost and will freeze at about -1 degree, where as the red will not freeze until -20 something or lower? you will need a new regulator/pipe depending whats on your van to change, but your appliances in the van will be fine, purists will tell you that one burns hotter than the other, but in reality it doesn`t make any noticable difference, Happy vanning I hope you have some great times.

TONY A.

PS if your going to Europe, they don`t sell calor, you`ll be better with camping gaz.its available in most supermarkets in France. (yet another regulator)

Hello Martin,

The other respondants have given you the gist of the situation, Technically you need a regulator to suit the gas you are using. Butane uses 28mBar pressure and Propane 37mBar pressure, The regulators are not interchangeable as teh bottles are different.

If you have a very new caravan, the regulator is fixed into the caravan and will conform to the new 30mBar dual standard. You can use either Butane or Propane, but you now have to select the correct connection pipe (pigtail) for the gas bottle.
