Gas & Electric Consumption

Have just extended a trip this weekend to Setthorns by three days at the start but due to work being carried out at the site was unable to get electric hook up for the additional days.

This will be the first time of going away without electric hook up for approx 15 years so do not have any feel as to how battery and gas will hold out bearing in mind the colder weather (when we had a caravan with no heating we never went away before Easter)and the need to use the motor mover to extract the caravan from its position behind the hitch post. Have given the battery a full day charging from the mains and have a full bottle of gas plus a small amount in the second bottle. I believe this should be enough but the better half is still anxious. WE have a Senator Arizona.

If you have a 110Ah battery for the motor mover and you switch off non essential fans lights etc (use the striplights if possible) and go easy on the TV you should get 3 days out of the battery.

If you have an 85Ah you could be pushing it.

Why not take a charger and ask the site to charge it for you - avoid running it right down.

If you are thinking of doing this more often think about investing in a spare battery or solar panel.

We use 2 batteries and a 20W panel and can last a week easily including occasional use of the TV, we do not have a motor mover.

On the gas side:

Running the fridge on gas - which I believe uses around 200 grams of butane (or propane) per day for a 70 litre fridge - like the popular RM 4210 series. So that's not going to be a problem.

Cooking on gas will use roughly 250 grams per hour - so again that won't be a problem, unless you're running a catering van and are on the go for the whole three days :)

Heating will probably be the biggest use - the Trumatic S3002 uses between 50 and 300 grams per hour. The maximum heat output of 3400 Watts (3.4kW) is equivalent to the 300 grams per hour usage rating. Having the heating on fully for 2 hours and half setting for another 6 hours is equivalent to 5 hours at 300 grams per hour - that's 1.5 kg of gas

So you could (depends on the weather and your idea of comfort) use up to 4.5 kg of gas on heating, plus another 1 kg for the fridge and cooking.

If you need to heat water - then just add in the hours it will be on - and rate it roughly the same as the Trumatic blown air heater.

Robert

And you should always be able to buy a replacement bottle from the site.

Last year we spent 2 weeks just up the rd from setthorns at Roundhill which has no hook ups. Senator Louisiana.

Note that it was the middle of summer so power usage was low and no heating required, we had the 2 best weeks of the year!

Fridge, water, cooking on gas was no prob.

We have a 110 amp hr battery which needed to be charged after the 1st week. We ran a laptop for TV for 2 hrs per day which was charged in the car during the day.

The Site wardens ran a battery recharging service for a small price.

Maybe worth spending the money saved on the hookup on a cheap spare battery to use when the other is being charged. Towsure at Southampton is just down the rd.
