Hi everyone

I have a Giest LV550 (2004) caravan but I can't get the fridge and water heater (Truma) to work on gas. Both work fine on electric and I have checked the gas / taps are in the on position.

Any Ideas ?

Dave, tghere are so many possibilities.

1 Have you got gas in the bottle?

2 What kind of regulator is fitted? on the bottle or bulkhead mounted?

3 Has the gas been disconnected all winter?

4 Have you allowed enough time to purge the pipework of all air?

1 st of all do you know if gas is getting through to the appliances, do all you cooker rings fire up does your central heating fire?

On the fridge do you have electronic ignition? An amber switch that when in the I on position tick tick ticks away, if you do make sure the electric switches are off and if the electric temperature gauge is at 0. With the gas knob turned to its maximum and depressed hold it there for 20 seconds then switch on the ignition switch or press the piezo ignitor, looking down the round glass viewfinder in the wall inside the back of the fridge at the same time, see if you can see an resemblance of a blue flame even if fleeting. If you have an assistant get them to go through the ignition process, and stand outside by the fridge vents to see if you can hear a whumph sound as the ingnitor tries to light any gas that might be actually getting through listening at the bottom vent might make hearing it easier, if this does not seem to be happening smell around the right of the top vent to see if you can smell any slight whiff of gas or heat. If this still does not work take off the fridge covers from the outside, if you have an electrolux fridge a coin in the screw head should make this easier, get a hoover or a foot pump, with a long enough tube, and have a suck or blow around the bottom of the chimney as you may have rust dust or spiders nests over the gas jet. And try it all again.

With the heater make sure the thermostat if fitted is set at a temperature make sure the battery is connected and the electrics box is switched to van on the wall. My heater switches have a a wall light switch for mains and another switch along side with a temperature dial and a sliding switch which when turned on lights a red LED initially then a green LED when the gas is lit if you have this and the light just stays red. I would take the cover off the of the heater exhaust outside and check to see if spiders have made their nests in the exhaust or if you can see them over the burner bar.

Beyond that I am sure someone else will be along with a better idea in a while.

If your gas hob does not work, i.e.none of the gas appliances work, then check on your regulator for a reset button and if it is there press it whilst the gas is on.

Many continental caravans have this and it needs to be reset each time the cylinder is changed or disconnected.

Thanks everyone for your advise.

try a few of your suggestions and they are both now working. I didn't realise you had to turn to electric to 0 as well that seemed to do the job for me. Saved me a tri[p to the local service centre and probably the best part of #100

thanks again

Dave
