Gas Heating

My S5 Indiana had it’s Truma gas heating inspected and serviced
last spring but as I’m permanently in France, it hasn’t been done this year. We
used the van last week for the first time this year and got a very strong smell
from it. It’s definitely not carbon monoxide but smells more like dust burning
off. Is there any way that I can easily dismantle it (without disturbing the
gas supply) in order to vacuum the dust out or should I wait until I bring it
back to the UK and get it serviced?

Hi Paul
The front of your Truma does lift/pull off. You can download more details from the Truma website. The heater innards are then easily cleaned with a vacuum cleaner helped by a small paintbrush. No disconnection of gas is required - the coupling is underneath the van anyway.

The Truma fire front does indeed come off, but it is pulled at the top before lifting.
Also it may have had a securing screw fitted to stop it coming off in transit, look between the top and first grille to see if there is any screws holding it to the fire surround.
If there is, remove it/them then pull the top edge of the fire sharply to release it from the spring clips, disconnect the plug from the fan control and lift upwards to free from the gas control rod.

Another trick is to put the heat on top wack for an hour or to, put on max ventilation windows door etc and you will fonf it will 'burn off' much of the dust,Of course I do not mean burn literally but this has worked for me.
