Hello All.

There several posts in other threads where the SECURITY aspect keeps cropping up so I thought I would start a one stop shop here for all those TIPS, GADGETS or DEVICES and DETERRENTS that we all do. The more aware we are the better, I've read one idea that I never thought of.

We have all sorts of Ideas and installed a few of them but I will start the ball rolling with............

Hidden tracking device that we monitor with our mobile phone anytime 24/7 without the need to pay for the service.

Come on Guys lets hear em :woohoo: :woohoo:

Hello Phil,

Its a good idea to try and get others views on topics. But in this case you have started this in the New Members section. Perhapse you should ask the Mods to transfer it to a more appropriate section.

Hi chalky,

Its a very simple piece of kit available for about £10. you connect it to a 12v supply and hide it in your van after you have put one of those free sim cards in it and set it up. (though I bought one £5 with some credit on it)

All you do then is phone it up from your normal smart phone. It will give you an engaged tone and you end the call.
30 seconds later you will get a text from the device with a link, press on the link and a map opens up with your device co-ordinates pin pointed on it. Voila there is your caravan to within 1 mtr.

Each time it sends you the link it will only cost the price of a text. 12p in my case.

Good idea thinks I, and cheaper than a mobile phone but i don't see how your idea of a phone would work unless the robbers answer it and tell you where they are :)

Hi WC,
When the device isn't actually sending you a text it "goes to sleep" so doesn't use any power.
even when sending a text it is minimal.

Hi Phil

Having read quite a few reviews about the one you have fitted, my question for you is as my van as a all alloy body would the signal be able to connect ok as it says the ideal placement is somewhere with a direct site to the sky and not surrounded by metal .... to fit one in my van i would have to fit it into one on the skylights, maybe it's different if you have ABS panels fitted to the van ?

Hi Sproket,

The best signal would be direct to atmosphere no doubt., but I have one fitted somewhere in my car which has thicker "walls" and it works fine.
I would think though that if it was tucked in the corner of a skylight it would be fine, I tend to think that anyone stealing the van wouldn't be looking for it in their haste to have the van away. I suppose wherever its hidden it could be found if they know it's there. This device is totally silent so you stand a good chance of knowing the van has gone and where it is before the spot it.
The only downside I've come up with so far is if it gets taken to a gps blackspot and there isn't a signal.

Hope this helps

Does the map update if the vehicle is moving, or do you have to keep "pinging" it to track it in real time?

Several of the security apps available for smartphones include a "find my phone" feature. Frequently these are used to disable a stolen phone or even take a photo of the user. I can locate my phone using my tablet or my Windows laptop.

I imagine I am not alone in having a smartphone I no longer use because I have bought a newer one
.

Yes good idea Chalky,
Personally I haven't got a spare smartphone lying about. But the one I do have needs charging up every 2 days !
That's what the purpose of the thread was for, to throw ideas around. Cheers ;)

You didn't answer my question about tracking using your device, which you're still being rather coy about. Does it exist, and if so what is it called and who sells it?

Even in sleep mode a device still has to use power to drive the circuit that 'listens' for the wake-up call. You don't get 'something for nothing'. ;)

When I was reading the reviews it mentions being able to track it vai a map .
Is this how trace your vehicle / caravan ?
1.Open http://orange.gps-trace.com/
2.Register an account from "GPS-Trace home"
3.Activation device
Write" name" → choose " device type" →" Unique ID"
TK102B/TK100/TK06A/GT02 device type is "Blueberry GT06N", " Unique ID" input full 15 digits IMEI number;
4.send SMS to set IP port and APN
TK102B/TK06A/TK100/GT02 SMS commands as below:
1) #IP#123456#193.193.165.166#20765#, reply : set IP port OK
2) #apn#123456#APN of operator#APN user name#APN password#, reply : set APN

Hi Seth,
Sorry for the delay, we are out and about in our van.
I bought ours off eBay for about £8 and they are now fitted in the car and caravan.
I am very happy with them.

Phil, what type of pay as you go sim card do you use, as every one i have come across so far are on a rolling monthly cycle for a sim only deal, admitted at a fiver a month to know where the van is, is cheap plus the possibility of tracking where it is via Google maps when you get the text reply has got to be a bonus .....

Hi sproket,

Sorry my mistake, OH says it's a sim only with no contract,, just 12p per text and top it up when required. I put a fiver on ours so it will last for 40 pings etc.

I haven't got a smart phone, will it send a text giving the co-ordinates so I can look it up on my tablet?

Hi,

I've just tried this and it came up with the coordinates,
N53.098470.W0.768627
This I then put into my iPad and pressed map instead of web.
It came up with my position, if you try it you will see where we are today. :)
Hope this helps

Is that near Newark Showground? So was that via a text message to a normal, non smart, phone?

Ha ha, yes it was on Newark show ground.
Yes it just sends you a txt, though mine is a smartphone, a txt is a txt so it should work fine.
