Geographical Howlers

Why is it that this otherwise great magazine commits such glaring editorial howlers?

In the latest issue on Page 30 the Cotswolds have been re-located to the Lake District in the map and on page 107 in the top right hand corner is a description reading "FAR LEFT: Washingpool Farm CL" when the picture shown is, according to the sign on the gate, that of "Higher Brandy Style Caravan Site".

I'd like to know what highly paid twit is checking for this sort of thing because if I can pick them up just casually browsing through the magazine, surely an editorial professional should be doubly hawk-eyed?

I was in the printing industry for over 40 years and learned very early in my career that such sloppiness attracted severe censure although I suppose in this day and age it will just be shrugged off.

With the magazine costing £3.60 per issue, I think the readership deserves better. People rely on the magazine for accuracy of information given.

Vic,

Good to hear from you.

You are of course correct. I've asked the production editor, Claudia Dowell to look at them and it transpires that the map was a hangover from last month - when the Ullswater feature was included. This has been highlighted as something to check in the future.

The campsite labelling issue is a little harder to get to the bottom of and I'm awaiting an explanation. There is no campsite we can find with the name 'Brandy Style' and the writer assures us that the site is called Washingpool Farm. That makes the sign hard to fathom.

Thanks for your observations, and I'm glad you find the magazine 'otherwise great'
