I was the N.U.P.E. ambulance rep for our station during the 89 strike. We were out for 4 months but had unbelievable support off the public and other government agencies. Even had support off some police but most of them made a killing out of us in overtime like they did with the miners. Some of the police locally wouldn't work overtime on principal and use to tell us of all the infighting of who was having the most overtime. Sad really because some of the officers used to come up to our station on a Saturday night to watch Match of the Day but we never saw them again once we went back to work. Police friends told us they were warned by their Superintendent to keep away because they wouldn't be welcome.
Once we had a day of action and lots of reps from various agencies joined us on the picket line. There were firemen, college lecturers, teachers, postal workers, all the utility workers, council employees, etc.
It was only from the publics generosity that we kept going so long.
I remember being invited by our college to do a debate over the dispute. Representing the government were two Tory councillors. I hate blowing my own trumpet but I wiped the floor with them, I must admit encouraged by the students. I can still hear the students laughing and clapping as I shot their argument into flames.
