Gold Driving License

One of my Japanese friends has been awarded a Gold License. If a Japanese driver has kept a clean license for 5 years they get a Gold License.
"Drivers with a Gold License don't have to renew their license forr five years as opposed to the standard three. Gold driver are eligible for a Safe Driver) card which gets them discounts at various hotels, hot springs, car rental places and gold courses etc around Japan">

Sounds like a great idea, rather than just bashing those who stray from legal driving in the UK, how about a similar scheme here to reward good behaviour and encourage road users?

My wife has a Gold AA card this year for being a Member for 40 years (not quite 3 or 5 as above
smiley-cry.gif
). I am an Associate member on her card.

The Gold card gives some extra perks and one of the services free, but I can't remember which one. Here's to the next 40 years

I got my AA gold card last year and my wife did as well. A small reawrd for all the money we've paid them

That's not quite the same deal as being rewarded by the state for good driving

We have a Royal Bank of Scotland Royalties Gold card that costs us £12.00 a month and as far as I can see gives us sweet Felicity Armstrong.
I'm cancelling it now. One of those things you forget about and get fleeced by your own Bank

Mods- take this topic off before the goverment gets wind
Renew license every three tears (sorry years) £20.00 + passport photo + postage + shoe leather or fuel to get the photo and then to the post box
But be a good boy/girl and then we can let you spend all this two years later, and then you can have a gold card and get discounts in places you never go or visit.
I suspect the majority of folk already do this every ten years to re-new there photo driving license, but for those of us who still retain there paper one there is no cost to renew until I reach 70 years old..... quite a few years to go yet!!

We've got Platinum's and a Black card, so what!
My point was that Japanese goverment seem to have found that rewarding drivers for good driving is worthwhile, so why not try the same here with our busy roads!
DVLA have run raffles if you SORN a car on line. I think a Gold Licence for keeping your license clean and motoring or discount benefits is a good idea.

Why do you want a reward?
Surely it's your responsility to drive in a safe manner towards yourself and others!
Break the rules and take the consequences---simple
I dont need a gold license, mines clean and has been for 34 years, oh I did get a parking ticket once.

My License will soon have been clean for 44 years
smiley-tongue-out.gif

I couldn't give a _ _ _ _ about getting a reward. With the standard of driving on our roads if there's any chance that some government could encourage new young drivers or more wayward drivers to behave, why not?

Paper license isn't a lot of good outside the UK Gagakev and I'd have lost the will to live years ago if I couldn't escape this mad house regulalrly! Try hiring a car in Tokyo or Bangkok without a photo card license. The Photo card also gives a reasonable indication if it belongs to a the person holding it, photo license should be compulsory

You cruel and unfeeling person,
You should be ashamed, fancy putting Felicity onto the streets!
smiley-cry.gif
What has Felicity done to you?
smiley-innocent.gif
Perhaps you should start a Woosie TV charity campaign and ask every body to donate just three pounds a month so you can look after Felicity. We'll make sure she writes a card to every donater...................We'll never put a health Felicty down!

Great idea Kopite, you should take note. Generally the Japanese people are far more respectful, polite and helpful than people in the UK and treat people they don't know amazingly well. It's a great country for a holiday as you get looked after very well.
Like a lot of eastern cultures, old people are well looked after unlike the UK. If it wasn't for my wife and family and the frreezing cold winters I might give it a go. The Japanese diet also suits me nicely as well.

Like numerous eastern lands, you get looked after very well as you get old. If It wasn't for my wife and family and the cold winters I'd give it a shot.

Dont think I would get to Tokyo or Bangkok, I also dont have or any need at the moment to have a passport
smiley-wink.gif

Been there done that, spent way too many hours in airport lounges wasting my life away, due to delays for no apparant reason, that was the reason I came back to caravanning.
Paper license was accepted in New Zealand.

Drivers may get away with a UK paper license in English speaking countries, many others you won't. It could also cause problems and delay you if a driver travels abroad. Personally if I lost my wallet I'd rather my license be of little use with a photo on it than be of use to some wayward types.
These days most airport have good facilities and with online check in, e-tickets, phone app booking and check in It's far better than ten years ago or later when my job involved a lot of flying travel.

In some countries caravans get MOT'd, Speed Cameras were used overseas before they came to the UK. Road pricing tools are used widely abroad and are now likely to become wider spread here, lots of things in our day to day lives come from ideas tried and initiated in other countries.
As the Japanese government offer something in return for good behaviour on the road it occured to me that it might be worth a punt here in the UK with busy road networks and high levels of new driver accidents.
I apologize if the idea came across as rocket science understanding level, I never realised it was so difficult to understand why the Topic was started

When I made my first comment I said

Obviously an idea for encouraging wayward drivers to behave is a difficult concept or of no interest to most PC forum carvanners.Difficult I guess

, never mind.

I can't turn my back can I?
I find it somewhat difficult to undersand why people who are outwardly sane embark on typewritten internet spats with other people who they have never met.
Paper licence - photo licece
Who cares as long as you are licened to drive and to tow your outfit legally and safely in the places that you decide to visit?
Time to re-visit the adult world methinks

Mmmmmm. nice idea except i know plenty of people whom like myself have clean driving records going back years and years and also have no accident claims either. again going back years and years. now lets assume i am a crap driver and i can assure you most of them are even worse than me.. wheres my plantinum driving card...................... and on a serious note there are plenty of advanced and retraining courses here in the UK to promote better driving and refresh peoples understanding of how to drive safer...........had a licience now for over 30 years and i never fail to be amazed at what i can learn from riding/driving courses...or maybe my memory went ions ago....

,
perhaps we should start a new club, "THE PAPER LICENCE CLUB" although I don't think there would be many members, it would be more "EXCLUSIVE" than any gold one,

Just lost mine, (sadly, big 70 last month) and they don't let you have it back. Did however scan and copy it before I let it go. (The copy is in better condition than the original!!)

Also - just looking at the photo one (new) it does not say on it that I am a registered organ donor, as it has on the old paper one for years. That's progress??
