Hi Deli Dave
- no charge @ 70, but you do automatically lose gps. C & D unless you pay for a medical. So didn't bother!

Ps Sproket - no shortage of members there!!

The whole paper license deal is supposed to be ending next year any way, police will be able to access all records using the photo license. The paper license with the photo card will go along with old the paper license. (Unless HM government have run out of funding for the change)
By 2015 everyone is supposed to be having a photo card or does anyone know if that has been dropped now?
You can pay for IAM courses and various others that may help you get an insurance discount. DVLA have run a raffle for online sorning already, I don't see why there' been all the fuss here about government potentially offering a good driving carrot especially for newer young drivers

Paper license and the paper part of the photo card is due to be done away, Supposed to start in 2014 and be inplemented by 2015 as far as I've seen.
The idea is to just have the photo card as the Police and others will be able to get all details of our driving record details using the card. But does the photo card need changing to facilitate that? I don't know and haven't seen anything about that. If access to points and endorsement details using a photo card license requires a new type of card I guess there will be a change over period whilst everyone will need the two part license until new cards are issued

I haven't seen the legislation covering this issue, but logically the DVLA already holds all the details of your licence and entitlements/endorsements, and the index is your "Driver Number".

What is probably happening is the DVLA driver records will be made available to interrogate, in much the same way that vehicle details are based on their registration number and the Automatic Number plate recognition systems they have.

This would be simplified if the photo driving licence could be quickly scanned to avoid human error. Perhaps they are looking at the bar-code(that links the card to the paper counterpart) or chip and pin type system.

Both my daughter and myself renewed our photo licenses a couple of weeks ago, due to them reaching the 10 year mark. We both did it on-line because we had valid passports, but the passports were expiring in a couple of months time so the license renewal was done 2 months before expiry date. WORD OF CAUTION - DVLA dated the new licenses from the application date not from expiry date so the Government has gain 2 months stealth tax

from my daughter. In my case I reach the age of 70 within the 10 years so the new license is only valid until aged 70 and needs to be re-applied for again. The on-line application also needed paper licence number, driver number, NI number, etc so DVLA were cross-referencing several databases.
Both the old photo license and its paper counterpart have to be returned to DVLA by post. A new EU photo license is received back, plus a new paper counterpart.

hi all,
well I may be an old fart "open to question" but I for one will keep my old green paper licence for as long as possible right untill the last day
smiley-cry.gif
if I have to,
there are reasons for this, it's like an old friend thats been around since I was a spotty faced kid and is the oldest thing I posess.
I for one absolutely refuse to jump on the money rounabout (pay for everything) driving is dear enough, it has to be changed in 6 years anyway "@70" and every 3 years thereafter thats soon enough for me thanks.
and despite assurances mistakes do happen on renewal, groups get lost, changed catagories alter what you can drive. and it takes forever to get thing put right after you have paid again,
so I'm quite happy as things are just now, if legistlation changes then there will be no option to change. but for now I will leave it thanks, give a gold licence to the kids if you wish, they need it, but leave us "old farts" alone then we will be all happy.
