We've stayed at Le Boucanet near to Grau du Roi in the Languedoc. It has direct beach access, good pools - one indoor, a good value restaurant, shop on site, nice bread, and is within walking distance of the lovely fishing village of Grau du Roi where there are some great restaurants - and a fish auction each day on the quayside. You pay a supplement for beachside pitches. Though the pitches are all a reasonable size, some are quite difficult to get on to because of the soft sand, and the site consequently tends to look crowded as people park their units on the firmer sand at the roadside of the pitch! The beach is lovely, and the sea shallow for quite a long way out. Toilet facilities are plentiful, and usually very clean (though this year a little lacking in a thorough 'going over' I thought - not noticed this previously!).

If you're planning an early season or late season holiday then you can stay there using Camping Cheques which brings the cost down to

You have not mentioned whether you are into 'entertainement' or are looking at quiet sittes. Many of the beachside sites tend to be of the larger size and very commercialised. They will also be packed solid during the last 2 weeks of July and the first 2 weeks of August, so if you want direct beach access, then there is a price to pay.

Have a look at the 'Yelloh' group of sites. These are usually beachside and have excellent facilies, but again can be busy and noisy in peak seasons.

This year it seemed especially crowded compared to other times we've visited in the past. We were disappointed this year because not many people had tried to get on to the pitch at all - just parked along the roadside. Some areas are better than others - generally the further into the site the firmer the pitch, and then the caravans and motorhomes actually use the whole pitch. There are some quite big pitches, (we had a huge one, directly on to the beach) but there are some smaller ones. The beachside pitches, this year, were extremely sandy with sand piled up against the rocks forming the seawall! This meant they were quite difficult to get on to - although there is a nice man with a big truck who will help. I've looked at the website and it does look crowded - which I think is one of the problems with any site with direct access to the beach. However, we'd still go back again because we like the site, and like the area.

Hi Jim,

We stayed at Le Boucanet this August for 3 weeks and can fully endorse the comments made by Valerie.

We also had a pitch on the front and the sand did make it difficult to get pitched, but as Valerie has said the site staff go out of their way to assist you with their big truck (just have to remember to wipe the trucks tow ball if you have a Alko stabilizer).

The Brits next to us keep their van in storage nearby and have been coming for the last 6 years and love it.

A Dutch couple at the side of us said they liked the area so much they had just been and brought a apartment in the nearby town of Grand-Motte.

The well off French certainly seem to like the site as just a few caravans down from us was Porsche Cayenne towing a Van.Never seen one of those on site before here or abroad.

I would certainly go to this site again if only just for the shear bliss of been in bed with all the windows open and listening to the sound of the sea lapping on the beach all night.

Regards

Nidge

We are not that bothered about on site entertainment, normally our kids have had it by the time entertainment starts!! - long may it continue!!
