Hi All.
Some years ago now, perhaps 6 or 7, Mr Brown,-you know him- the guy who continually holds his hands over his ears whilst humming a very loud tune! Anyway, as I was saying, about 6 or 7 years ago in a previous incarnation,he put up the fuel duty by 1.5p per litre. I was so angry at the time that I was determined to try other methods of getting about. I had heard that vegetable oil was a good substitute for the increasingly expensive diesel So I made enquiries as you would. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I had my little diesel van converted to a two tank system to burn veg oil. This requires one to start on dyno diesel, warm the engine to operating temp and then switch to Veg oil. 230,000 miles later I think I made the right choice! No Sulphur, recycled CO2, and 50% less emissions! But what has this got to do with caravanning? Well, so successful has this experiment been that I have recently sourced a Toyota Surf 3.0 which is in fantastic nick at 12 years old. I have converted it and am now towing my caravan to distant places for next to nothing and in the most green way you can imagine. Ok, it has its drawbacks. you have to change your filters and engine oil a little more often. You have to source your oil, oh, didn't I tell you, - this is second hand oil I use and yes I have got a waste transfer licence before anybody asks!!!. You have to clean it and pour it and you have to take your fuel with you on a journey but as long as I do that I can drive towing a tandem axle van to anywhere in the country for about 40p! Oh I do love my caravanning these days! (www.dieselveg.com)
