Grit in cold water and No hot water, Is it connected ?

Hi All, Newbie here!
Went out for the first time in our ( new ) 1988 Fleetwood Colchester for a tester run, first time ever caravaning and we loved it, but after a day of clear water we started getting grit coming from the cold water and clear no grit from our ( cold ) hot water supply, never did have hot water, all the electrics worked okay but only 2 of the 3 lights came on on the wall carver control switch !
Unfortunately we have no instruction manuals for our appliances.
We were using the site electric hookup.

My questions are:
Is it most probably just a filter problem on the cold water feed ?
Is the lack of hot water, A fuse, On or Off switch I need to use, etc. ?
Could the 2 problems be connected ?
I'm going to get a manual and have a look but any advise will give me a head start.
Thank you in advance
David

The "grit" if black, is the charcoal from the filter which is disintegrating and needs removing immediately.
The Carver wall switch with 3 lights is for gas operation ONLY.
The Green light indicates all is well
The Amber light indicates lack of 12v (low battery)
The Red light indicates the burner has failed to light.

If the water filter you have is the screw in type, fitted on the outside of the caravan.
Then its a good chance the filter cartridge has fallen apart inside, allowing the charcoal into the water pipes.
It took use a couple of years to get rid of the black bits from our old 1997 avondale.
What we did in the end was to take the filter apart, just leaving the screw cap and seal, then using the cap, no filter.
