We only have one incandescent light in the home and that is 100w and is for a lamp as I have yet to come across a reasonably priced LED lamp that will give the same illumination as our 100w lamp which is switched on most of the day and evening during the winter. It also seems to last longer than any £8 LED bulb.
What’s that light doing then having to be on all day in winter? I can perhaps understand a need when it’s dark, but daytime is a puzzle.

Well I never. All because of a need to replace kitchen lighting. Food for thought obviously. ;)

For information: Fortunately I was able to replace 2 failed halogens with 2 LED lights. All works perfectly although, as expected, with a slight difference in colour.

As for the future when the thorny subject of dimmers will raise its ugly head!

Not so far from home there is a small electrical/DIY shop owned by Electrical Wholesalers and Contractors.
I expect by shopping there I will be able to buy not just the LEDs but also a suitable dimmer.

I will put my trust in people who actually work with electricity on a daily basis and through experience will be offering sound advice.

The morel of the story is be sure to take the advice offered by a supermarket worker with a degree of skepticism and search for a second opinion.

I don't know your circumstances to be able judge what you mean by reasonable. However, 100w equivalent LED bulbs can range from £2 pounds upwards. Of course quality may vary but the light output should be comparable and unless you are unlucky they will last considerably longer than an incandescent bulb.

One difference with LED bulb replacements for the typical bayonet cap incandescent bulb is that the light beam may have a smaller light angle than you're used to. That may or may not be an issue and could depend on the lamp fitting your using.

Dark lounge and I use a kindle and laptop for reading and as we all know staring at a bright light for hours can damage your eyes. To soften it I have the lamp in the corner switched on.

We have 5 watt led “ standard” lamps in three corners and they give a nice warming light that we can read by or use IPads. They replaced 60 watt incandescent. So wouldn’t an 11 watt or there about, be a substitute for your 100 watt? I also have a really bright reading light that uses a 25 watt LED daylight bulb. But don’t need it that often only for smaller print or these silly publications that print blue pages with black text or some other obtuse combination of colours.

We did try a low wattage LED lamp which costs us nearly £9 and it lasted less than a month. For less I was able to purchase a pack of 6 incandescent bulbs off Amazon and still had change for a beer at the local. Each has lasted several months so still got two left. Also gives the lounge a nice warm glow. :D

I think back about 2008 there were plans to ban the sale of incandescent lights but since this was an EU law Brexit kicked that into touch and they seem to be on sale again.

Now from about Sept this year sales of Halogen bulbs are supposed to be halted.

The government certainly likes to keep the voters in the dark. Particularly about second or more jobs.

On news this morning it seems that countries with fossil fuel car manufacturers have told Johnson that they will not be signing any accord or treaty. I wonder why?

They weren’t all banned, existing stocks could be sold, speciality types could be sold and there were loopholes in the directive. I’m not aware that Brexit changed anything as far as the UK is concerned as the pre exiting law was rolled over into the new law book. HMG doesn’t seem to have done anything to re introduce incandescents, why should they. I suspect that many of those still on sale may be being traded as existing stock manufactured in “dubious” places. Since moving into this house I have progressively replaced the incandescent and halogen with LED bulbs and LED arrays. I only had one LED fail that was shortly after installation. It was a high spec Phillips which was replaced without any delay by Amazon. Early bathtub. To be honest I really cannot fault the light output or colour of the domestic lights. I think we’re people have a problem it could be selecting the wrong lamp for the duty cycle.

So that’s U.K., France, Sweden, USA, Italy, Japan, Korea, Germany, Spain, Czech, Mexico, Canada etc and not forgetting China is it? Does it matter as all the manufacturers are working furiously to introduce EVs snd surely it cannot be because U.K. have decided to ban the sale of ICE only cars by 2030. Our market doesn’t have that much clout.
So what are they not signing up to?

Without any doubt that bulb must have been faulty and you should have returned it to the seller for replacement or refund.

I had a similar experience with a dimmable bulb from Tesco. Fortunately it had its recent date of manufacture printed on the bayonet fitting. At first the customer service agent told me it must have been used too much (like yours it was only about 6 weeks old) She was not going to exchange it until I pointed out the manufacturing date and even if it had been running continuously it could not have exceeded the number of hours it was claimed to last. She still wasn't that impressed, so I started to quote CRA. --- I got a fresh bulb which has now worked for at least 30 months every night for 10 hours at teh lowest dimmable setting as a safety light on the landing.

I think you should try again.

You are correct however unfortunately thinking that the LED bulb would be reliable and last a year tor two, I disposed of the receipt. Won't make that mistake again.
