Handbrake safety cable

Hi,

Recently I mistakenly left my safety cable attached to my tow bar and drove my car away !!

The cable was pulled off the caravan and the handbrake was engaged fully. The groundsmen then came along and chewed the cable up in the grass mower - can anyone help ? - where can I get a new one ? - is it easy to fit ? - how much are replacements ?

very grateful for any help.

Hello Simon,

The cable is called a 'breakaway cable' and it is designed to pull the caravans parking break on if teh car and caravan separate when towing so it did what it is supposed to do, except you wernt towing at the time.

Most caravan dealers will have replacements and they should only cost a few pounds. They should also come with the fixing links so it can be connected to your caravan properly.

If you are in any doubt about DIY seek help from your dealer.

The cable is scraficial

If you go to http://www.ebay.co.uk and enter item number 130238057471, you'll get one delivered to your door for four quid.

Hi Simon

Been there...done that! What a pain, eh?

I bought one for about four quid - it's dead easy to fit, but you do need some good pliers and something that'll give you a bit of leverage (large screwdriver, for instance).

Took me about ten minutes to fit. So it should take most other people about five.

I carry a spare now - just in case!

Matter of interest - how fast were you going when you broke it?

Hi,

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the reply. I was just pulling off from a stop.

Have received a new one from ebay but not fitted yet. It has a large keyring type fixing on one end which I presume you prize open, fit around the handbrake and close back up ?

I had to buy one in the summer - at very short notice - on the way to fortnight summer holiday!!!!

I saw the key ring type attachment and was initially really quite pleased at how OBVIOUSLY easy it would be to fit...

O how wrong I was. I'm smiling now, but I don't remmeber smiling at the time (but I'm sure that I didn't use more then 15, or perhaps 20 expletives).

It is a simple job, but those rings are just so tight, and I was making use of an odd job toolkit at the time. 🙂

Don't worry, you'll be fine!
