handbrake

Has anybody known of the handbrake coming on whilst pulling your caravan. I have an Elddis Advante 2007, whilst travalling home from a short weekend brake I pulled into a service station to fuel up when I went to pull away the caravan wouldn't go forward upon investigation I found that the handbrake was in the fully on position. I released the handbrake and went on my way. According to my dealer a mustn't of released the handbrake causing the brakes to bind. Can anybody help. This has just cost me over 400 pounds to fix.

The caravan club made comment about this some time ago, its more common now due to the one shot handbrake, my van has one, never rated it from day one, found the old ratchet brake much more user friendly.

I always take special care when i put the brake away cable on, to ensure a good loop in the wire, to prevent the hand brake pulling on while cornering.

David,

The most common cause of this is the breakaway cable is too tight or routed wrongly through the overrun device. As a result during the normal sideways and up & down articulation of the car and van whilst towing it pulls the on the cable applying the handbrake.

Check that you have enough play in the cable when coupled up that you dont have it too tight or it can snag applying the brake. If your cable sheath is is damaged or bent you may need to replace it,

Best regards

Andy.
