If your getting rock pegs make sure they have the serated edges at the botton of the pegs to enable them to obtain a better grip.

I bought some rock pegs recently but they are a smooth finish and on a recent trip to North Wales they came out of the shale hardstanding quite easily with even a moderate wind.

Put the rock pegs in at an angle. I use a 'dumpy' masons hammer - a bit heavier to carry but saves a lot of effort.

If pegs are difficult to get out, a standard claw hammer works better than the specialised peg pullers. if pegs are really stubborn pour some water round each one and leave for a few minutes, then tap gently sideways before attempting to pull.

(Yes, I carry two hammers despite the weight. They have been very useful in other ways as you can use the dumpy on it's side as an anvil)

Danny ,

whilst on the pegs issue have you thought about a "storm strap" for the awning? When it's windy I wouldn't be without it.

There are different types, ones that go over the whole awing or ones that anchor internally holding down the two side roof poles.

Maybe your Uncle left them in a bag?

Cheers

Before you rush off to buy rock pegs Danny I have a feeling that the hard standings at Warren Farm are tarmac with the awning pitched on the grass next to the h/s.

It might be worth telephoning their reception who will tell you for sure.

There is a caravan accessory shop in the reception at Northam Farm caravan park just up the road, they also sell caravans with the new ones at the front of the park and the used trade ins in a compound behind (the used ones are overpriced i.m.o.) and another small shop which sells accessories between Northam and Warren farm.

Handy if you have forgotten anything or if a fuse blows.

dustydog- not at the van until next week so cant look yet, from the top of my head i would expect that there would be the strap in ne of the bags as theres a huggggggge awning bag, long pole bag,a smaller one and a couple of little ones with bits and bobs for the awning.

were not away until the 8th so i will google a storm strap so i know what to look for and buy one if one isnt there :)

parksy, thaks for the heads up,as far as i beleive were on a grass pitch, they have a quiter part of the park a quarter of a mile up the road wich wehave to stay on the sat and sun as there is a rally that weekend in the main park. least if will give us the practice we need with the awning etc.also, thanks for the tip with that shop,no doubt we will need it.lol

Hi Danny

What make is your awning?

Some makes, particulary I know of Bradcot and Isabella, have their own patent awning storm straps. These are straps which wrapped around the roof poles, INSIDE, the awning and then secured to the ground by large metal corksrews, like the ones for securing dog leads!!

A more univeral on is a long strap which goes over the top of the awning fabric outside and is secured by big pes on either side. If you use one of these I would recommend getting the padded sleeves that go over the straps where they pass over the side poles as otherwise the strap can wear holes in the awning canvas, due to the it moving in the wind. Bradcot and Isabella say the use of these type of tie-downs invalidate their warranty.

If I may suggest, unless you are desperate for the space, it might be worth leaving the awning for your first trip out as you will have a few other things to get used to!! We only use our awning when we are on sites for a long time AND when it's not too windy. We helped a couple of people who had had their awnings torn of their vans by high winds when we were in Anglesey at over Easter!!!

Regards

Tim

thanks tim

i think it is an isabella awning, not sure of the make,i forgot, its a full awning in green.

as were there for a week we may put up after the first couple of days but im going to try and have a trial run before we go so i can colour code the poles etc.

i would be guted if that was me,it will be going up if the water is like it has been this week as we have a dog so it will give her some shaded outside space as she is a border collie so with her colour and being a hyperactive dog she gets hot etc....

Snap Danny

We too have a long-haired border collie but Max is old (10+) now and very happy to sleep on 'van floor, as near to the heater as he can get! He still likes 'vanning with us as he knows we have more time for long walks when we're away.

Max has been all over Europe with us and seems to cope well with the high (30+) summer temperatures in France and Italy. He's booked to accompany us on our summer travels this year, hopefully to Slovenia and Croatia.

love collies, ours is 9 months old,she was all legs when we got her as a pup.lol. she will sleep in the caravan with us but if the weather is as hot as it is now then will be nice to get the awning up and give her some nice shade while were sat outside.

this year we are going to stick to uk sites and get to grips with everything and maybe after a year we may think of a van upgrade and a trip to europe :)

HI! Danny i have found that my awning is actually a lot hotter than the van if we leave the dog i always leave him in the van rather than in the Awning (wait for all the replies stating that you should not leave them in hot weather )i have done it for the last 8 years with no problems .i close all the roof blinds and close the side blinds 3/4 of the way down and open all windows a good few inches plenty air getting in .dog just lies on the floof and sleeps . Awning gets a lot hotter than the cool van .Thats what the RSPCA told us to do years ago .

Cheers Duggie
