Has anyone had a blow out with Tyron Bands on?

Has anyone had a blow out with the Tyron Bands on?

If so are you glad you had them on, or where they a waste of time?

Think of having them fitted to on single axle Bailey.

Any thoughts?

I had a blow-out on the M6 a couple of years ago. I was sitting at between 60 & 65 mph, and only realised something was wrong whenever I felt unusual vibration.I pulled onto the hard shoulder to find the offside tyre ripped to shreads, but thankfully, still on the rim.To say I was glad I had tyrons fitted, could be something of an understatement.

I ordered a new 'van last year, and Tyrons were the first additional item I insisted on having.

If you do decide to get them, don't forget to get one fitted to the spare as well, just in case you have to use it.

We had a blow out on our old van, hubby was pulling it up a very steep hill at the time so we were not going fast at all.

Being in the inside lane it was just a matter of pulling onto the hard shoulder.

This was also a single axle, no damage done only to the tyre.

So the tyron bands at the NEC, and they looked good.

We had a blowout in the middle lane doing around 60 - 65 on a single axle. Felt nothing,but looking in the mirror all I could see was rubber strewn across the road. Hardly any tyre left on the rim, but no other damage. Would certainly recommend that you fit them.

Over the past 35 years I have experienced four tyre blowouts, (one was a crossply years ago and three were Dunlop SP's fitted to a Compass). Even though Tyrons were not fitted none of the tyres came off the rim, so if I fitted Tyrons, how would I know if they were effective?

i had a blow a few years ago on the M4 at 60 MPH the tyre seemed to explode,i just slowed down gradually and pulled on the hard shoulder the single axle bailey Moselle behaved very well ,i didnt have tyron bands fitted and i still dont ,so i cant really report on the issue as i have never experienced both situations

Vernon's and Joby's response would tend to confirm that Tyron bands can't be considered a vital safety feature. When owners which have had them fitted say that they were able to stop following a blow-out without further consequences, who knows whether they would not have been able to do the same without them under the same conditions?

Tyron say this :

CARAVAN

Standard Sprite Musketeer. Laden to Maximum Gross Weight. No stabiliser fitted. Ford Cosworth (460bhp). Standard suspension.

Tes Trackt: Bruntingthorpe Test Track, Leicestershire.

Vehicles fitted with Tyron wheel safety bands.

The caravan tyre was detonated at 113.3mph (recorded by RAC timekeepers) and speed maintained over half mile. The outfit was turned at the end of the track to repeat the run at an average speed of approximately 100mph. On the same tyre simulated 'snaking' trials were performed at 60mph. Then from 70mph an emergency stop was executed, into a coned 'box' approximately 1 metre (3') wider than the caravan. At the completion of all tests the caravan wheel was totally undamaged. No damage had been sustained by the caravan's wheel arch, wheelbox or trim.

Agreed they don't say if they tried it without but I have a friend with a tyre business and he tells the story of a caravan he was called out to on M6 where the tyre had shredded and after going through the wheel arch started to drag clothes out of the wardrobe and deposit them at intervals along the motorway!!

Your friends story about the tyre flailing the caravan - is just as likely or even more so with Tyron bands fitted - the bands are designed to stop the tyre bead from coming off the rim, and they don't stop the tyre from shredding and flailing.

The mechanism of failure determines how the tyre behaves - and detonating a tyre (leaving a small hole in the sidewall) is perhaps not representative of most tyre difficulties.

Having suffered a blow out on the A9 with tyron bands fitted, I find the article about the test at Bruntingthorpe very hard to believe.

Yes the band prevented the tyre from leaving the rim but the casing shreaded very quickly (within 1/4 of a mile) and resulted in very severe shaking of the unit. Yes it kept it in a straight line but the vibration was so severe it shook the clothes off the hangers in the wardrobe before I had a chance to stop.

They will be presenting the product in the best light and as you say it may be hard to believe but must have been substantiated on that day at that time .that may not be the same as in real life !!

hi folks never had tyrons fitted and upto now never had a blowout either (im i the lucky one) and thats after 30 odd years of towing Ive only ever had one puncture on the A1 going north and apart from feeling the the van pull to one side on left hand turns could not tell anything was wrong

the tyre was completely flat but stayed on the rim and as a matter of course was written off and a new one fitted.

I cannot speak of the effectiveness of the bands on a major blowout but personally feel that general tyre maintainence is probably more important, every year without fail I take the tyres off and have them inspected professionally and have new valves fitted any sign of wear or cracking and the tyre is replaced this seems to work better for me.

During my thirty years of caravanning, I've read on a number of occasions, where tyres have burst and the wheel rims have gouged into the tarmac, resulting in some 'vans flipping over, and the thought of this happening to me was one of the reasons that I decided to have them fitted.During that time, I've also seen a number of 'vans on continental autoroutes completely mulched into matchwood, and regardless of whether these incidents were due to snaking or blowouts, I believe that having the tyrons would definitely be an advantage in the latter case.
