can damp in cavaran cause any harm to children

Andrew, basically yes it can.

Not the actual water, but the mould which grows on the damp wood and produces spores.

Not only can be damaging to children, but anyone in contact with it, especially if they have a pre disposition to respiratory problems, like Asthma etc.
