Ok can't think of the heating brand but it's the common one....are there any simple ways to explain how to run the heat on the electric via the vents....it baffles me!

Without the model of heater it is impossible to answer your question.
With all tech queries the make , model and age of van and the model of the problem item is essential.
 
As you have the Truma it should have the Ultraheat unit as the electric heating item which is located behind the gas fire.
Mounted somewhere near the fire should be a control unit with an outer dial with selection of 500, 1000 and 2000, and an inner dial with selection of 1 to 9.
With the heater switched on there should be a green light in the corner of the wall control unit.
If on mains supply with at least 10A supply then set the outer control to 2000 and the inner to 6 or 7 after a short time you should feel heat coming from the fire.
Now to get the fan working to give blown air heating, turn on the fan via the control on top of the gas fire.
It has 3 settings, A = Automatic, O = Off and the other symbol like a stylised tick is manual speed control.
Set the speed to 2 or 3 , any more and you will pull too much cold air and not feel any heat.
