Ken,

My advice is to go for the 3 ltr Toyota, I think its a better car and put together rather well. I have had 3 Toyota Hilux pickups, not the same but similar, and had no problems at all just the usual service items.

Our friends who we caravan with tow their twin axle Swift with a 3 ltr Surf and it goes like bloody hell ! On the down side it likes a good drink, but thats the price you pay for all that power.

Recently we changed most of the front steering components and wheel bearings on his Surf and now its back to normal. Parts are easy to obtain from a supplier in Bristol called Rough Trax, he specialises in Toyota Surf's and they have a web site

www.toyotahilux.com

Hope this helps...............

at the end of the day, we all have our own preferences. I was advised by a local dealer who imports both Surfs and Pajeros. His preference was Toyota - better build generally, slightly bigger engine, but much smoother to drive. He drives a Toyota Land Cruiser. I think the Surf may be better on fuel - I have seen reports that it can be as little as 15 mpg towing.

I've no regrets with the Surf.

Good luck!

Hi,have to agree with the majority.

3.0 Surf over 2.8 Pajero,much better on juice,I've had two 2.8 auto's,nice cars but what a thirst!

The Surfs are nice, just make sure if you buy one to get the coolant system drained, flushed and filled with quality coolant as some of the older 3.0 diesels are now becoming prone to the same head problems as the 2.4's.

Alternatly,why not go for a 3.1 Trooper?

Excellent tow car, fairly frugal if your gentle, can get 34+ out of mine solo and 24-26 towing 1400kg.

Also they are proven bombproof, unlike the 3.0's.

Great on long journeys with pleny of room for two 6ft teenagers in the back lol.

I looked at both the Toyota's and the Mitsubishi's and thought the Pajero was a better built and equipped vehicle. The 2.8 does about 25mpg normally and about 20mpg towing. They are one of the best off road vehicles around and spares are cheap enough and readily available. The LWB is not as bulky looking as the Surf, and they are nor so agricultural.

Try looking in this month's 4x4 magazine - they have an article on buying a used Pajero. I think they recommend them as a good vehicle.

There is also loads of info. on www.POCUK.com.

You can probably guess which one I bought! Now had 12 months of trouble free motoring and enjoyed every minute of it.

Graeme.

If you are near Bristol another useful contact is D J Hale on Fishponds trading estate, they specialise in breaking 4x4s and that includes all brands and imports.

We had a fair bit of stuff from them when we had a Shogun (it was totally reliable but had ripped seats and corroded wheels).

They are on the web as well.
