Help needed - Insurance

I'm new to all this caravan business and need some advice.

I have got a 1988 Abbey Stafford - donated by a kind friend - and I am not sure where I stand with regards to insurance.

Is it compulsory? Do I need to insure my van to take it on the road? Or is it covered by my car insurance?

Basically - if it flies off when I am driving down the road and hits a roller who pays??

Sorry if this seems a bit vague - like I said this is all new to me.

It`s not compulsory, it doesn`t need it to go on the road, and you are normally covered by your cars insurance when towing.(Worthwhile checking with your insurance provider, who may require notification)

If it becomes detatched, it wouldn`t be covered.

It would probably cost you less than a hundred quid to insure the van, its contents and third party risks.

TBH if anyone isn`t prepared to pay that amount of money to safeguard their property and compensate an innocent who may be killed or maimed by it, in my view they shouldn`t be on the road as its unlikely that they will be concerned about safety generally or get the van serviced, tyres replaced etc.

Not suggesting you fall in that category, Jonathan, just voicing my opinion.

Happy (and safe) caravanning.
